4 little blues hatched yesterday. This one is hungry. Looked in on them this morning. So we are expecting fledge on May 19 – but as we have noted this year – rules do not apply. I will watch for the fledge between May 18 and 21.

Stafford, VAMay 3, 2019 at 6:50 pm #7156David……how exciting. Your bluebirds start a little earlier than here in Michigan. How many broods do you normally have in a season?

May 3, 2019 at 8:31 pm #7157Thanks Judy.
In most years I have had 3 nestings. 2 years ago i took down the box due to HOSP and HOWR after the first brood. Last year I had 2 nestings – late season start. I am hoping that this early nesting will lead to 3 again. It is nice when the combined group here can produce 100 to 150 young per year to help our BB population to grow and thrive.
I hope that yours start to build soon.David

ConnieMay 3, 2019 at 10:32 pm #7161Thanks Connie. I can’t help myself. I take the same pictures every year. The new birds all look the same. I might just start recycling the old pics. Naah that wouldn’t be right. It’s fun to see the new ones grow just like their earlier broods.

May 10, 2019 at 10:28 am #7192Took a look at the nestbox this morning to see the progress of the little ones. Here they are at day 8. The dad bird was on the shepherds hook about 20 feet away as i was walking around the box to check on my flower garden. As i was turning my back to him, he swooped into the box with food for the brood. I am not sure if that is a sign that he no longer sees me as a threat, but it is the first time I have been that close without him bolting off to a tree.

Stafford, VAMay 10, 2019 at 8:50 pm #7195The pictures are wonderful David. My little ones should hatch next week. My mama seems to be more flighty than she was earlier, I try not to disturb her but even my car coming in makes her take flight which didn’t bother her a week ago. I hope all 5 eggs 🐣 hatch but only time will tell. Keep the pictures coming.
ConnieMay 11, 2019 at 9:01 am #7196Thanks for sharing your pictures they are a joy to see. Cute that papa blue is a little more trusting of your presence. I believe they know we are trying to help them.

May 16, 2019 at 8:44 pm #7219I saw both parent birds sitting on the shepherd’s hook this morning (early – sun just coming up) and I tried to get a photo of both but missed it. Got the remaining bird on the hook with a grub in its beak. Look at the size of that meal! (I adjusted the photo to get the bird to stand out with the darker background. Not a lot of sun out there at 7:30 AM
