Came home Sunday afternoon to discover my baby blues have fledged to the trees. missed the whole event. I never peeked so I have no idea how many there were this time. First fledge was 2 and 2 eggs that never fertilized. I’ll be opening the box and cleaning it out this week so hopefully won’t find anymore unhatched eggs. Mom and dad are both coming for the mealworms and heading right up into the trees. It’s all kind of sad though knowing the season is over here in Maine. Usually by the first of august it’s like someone turns a light switch off and all the bird songs and noise they make just stops. My favorite time of year is coming to a close. All of have to look forward to now is waiting for my new chicken babies to start laying there first eggs. That will be nice. Hopefully My blues will now return every year in april instead of june like this year. Should have some sightings of the new babies in the trees before they leave the area all together. hope so anyways. Baby blues forever

Maybe yours will be insane like mine and try again! Three eggs again…
But I do hate that empty nest feeling. Maybe you will get to see the babies coming to the mealworm feeder..That is so fun.
PS i’ve missed every fledge ever. LOL.

yes Lisa, I have been lucky in that aspect. I have seen all my fledglings leave the house, At least part of them. some have got out without me noticing but my timing has been pretty lucky to catch some. This time though i missed them all. My blues have yet to let any babies near the feeders they always attack them and drive them back to the trees but if this is the season finale maybe they will.

Fledging is so hard to witness unless you can watch all day for several days. I have seen only a couple of EABL fledge events and one TUTI fledging which was the funniest thing ever. One little guy stayed in the hole for a really long time, alternating his butt and head in the hole. He just couldn’t decide.

It seems like I am always working on fledge day and the one day I was off, I was so tired I slept til 11 and missed everything!

Off topic but I was out at 3 PM adjusting my sparrow spooked and flushed mom. She laid her 3rd egg today so I hope incubation is in process. It gets so darn hot here.

Sure enough, I emptied the nest box out last night and once again found another egg that never hatched. This is definitely a weird year. Last year they had 6 eggs and all hatched and this year they had 2 hatch and 2 that didn’t in first brood and now 1 more that didn’t. Wonder what gives here. Dad shooting with a half loaded gun or mom has issues. Not sure but I haven’t seen any of the new fledglings yet so I have no idea how many made it out this time. Hopefully next year will be better. At least there are some new blues in the area. Now that it is over Daddy blue is sitting on top of my tallest tree either singing or calling not sure which but it’s nice to hear them.

I often have an egg that doesn’t hatch. 3 of 4 of this past brood hatched…
