It has taken a while but my bluebird pair have finally started their first brood of the season. It is a bit later that most of you – but they are on the way.

Stafford, VAMay 9, 2022 at 3:26 am #24296This is great news! So glad a pair finally came and used your nest box, David! That happened to me one year. It was the middle of May until a bluebird pair came and used my nest box for their 1st brood.
Love the pictures! Again congrats!

Stafford, VAMay 10, 2022 at 10:15 am #24315David, this is wonderful news!! When I saw the photo of your first egg, I was so happy for you. It’s been a long wait. Yesterday I see what is clearly a bluebird nest in one of my boxes. Hooray!!! Now I’ll hope for eggs. Enjoy the nesting!! Your blues have come home to roost.
May 10, 2022 at 8:04 pm #24334And one more makes 5. Didn’t see a new egg this morning before we drove to Williamsburg to see my wife’s cousin. But it was there when we returned this afternoon. Hopefully we will have a hatch around May 24.

May 11, 2022 at 10:42 am #24345Thanks everyone. Yes it has been a strange start this year. Julie, that is the way mine started a week ago. One day a nest appeared and it took another day or two before the first egg appeared. Sky (is your name Barbara?) I will add you to my list of BB watchers for annual statistics that I started last year. When you report your egg hatching and fledging data I put them on the list that I eventually share with Cornell University for their annual survey of Bluebirds nationwide. No names or locations are given to Cornell.

Stafford, VAMay 11, 2022 at 10:24 pm #24355Got my first finally too. The nest was ready weeks ago so I thought they abandoned or something happened to mama. So thrilled today when I saw her head pop out.
May 11, 2022 at 10:30 pm #24358Phillyblues, I just asked you if you had a nest yet!! Hooray!!! This is super news. Makes me remain hopeful. They were at the box today, but didn’t stay long. My neighbor was shoveling gravel into a wheelbarrow, so too noisy, I think. I remain optimistic! I do have a 2nd active nest of chickadees! So amazing. And we have 2 robin nests on the property at the moment, along with the tree swallows and house finches. So there’s lots of action to enjoy, but I’m hoping for bluebirds, too! This encourages me so much!
May 11, 2022 at 10:39 pm #24362Best of luck Julie! Stay hopeful. I was preoccupied with my latest obsession of feeding orioles. I have been trying for years and finally have had several male oriole visits! So beautiful.
May 12, 2022 at 10:04 am #24368PhillyBlues – Nice picture of that beautiful oriole. I have had the Baltimore orioles feed from my hummingbird feeder (just sugar water) for several years (even the female) and also had had the Orchard Orioles, which are not nearly as colored/beautiful. Thanks for sharing. (I’m too stingy to put out the real oranges, as I eat them myself! ) Also, congrats on your first BB egg.
May 12, 2022 at 11:12 pm #24372Very good news about the new BB egg and your orioles, philly.
