I would have removed the screen entirely, nests get flattened out by the nestlings. My momma blue this year sat on her egs all day even during the hot spell we had. Mine just fledged on Tuesday.

I was scared to pull the screen out. I had success last year despite the screen. I have yet to see the mom or dad for this round. Only three eggs still.

I totally agree with Donna about removing the screen – maybe keep this in mind for next year, ok?

Sadly I think the eggs are abandoned. Only three still and no mom in sight or earshot. Holding out hope but the eggs felt cool.

You can’t go by how the eggs feel and you really shouldn’t touch them anyway. Oil from your hands can block the pores of the egg. If enough pores are blocked, the egg dies.

Nothing tells me they are abandoned at this point. She doesn’t have to be in the box all day if the weather is warm. Further, three can be a complete clutch.

              Don’t give up yet!

Darn it! Pretty sure the are abandoned at this point. I took a photo of the eggs a few days apart and they haven’t moved…not even a blade of grass is moved. So sad and disappointed. Anything I can do to salvage the eggs at this point or are they likely dead?

I would imagine they are no good by now – it has been over 8 days since you have seen mama. Did you dot the eggs with a marker to see if they were being turned, or just looking at their position? I’d wait a few more days and then clean out nest & eggs – it would be getting late in the season there for another nesting I imagine, so no hurry about removing them. Sorry this has turned out bad.
