Our nestlings are 7 days old. Next week we have three hot days forecast: Tuesday (98); Wed (104; Thursday 100). Our nestlings will be 11-13 days old.
This is really hot for Oregon and I am hoping someone in warmer climates can give me a clue whether they have any chance of survival in a box sitting in the sun (with a sunshade for whatever good it does).
I have actually entertained the idea of moving the box to shade if the alternative is to fry them. But even in the shade I am not sure if they will survive.
Any thoughts?

Willamette Valley, OregonJuly 28, 2017 at 8:43 pm #5842I wish I knew! I am in extreme heat country and mine usually have the sense to stop by June 1! We are all in this craziness together, it looks like! Mine have 8 day old eggs at the end of July. Unheard of!
I was talking to the guy at out local WBU store about an unrelated topic today and he told me not to get my hopes up. I definitely haven’t!
But I’m armed with tons of mealworms and a mister system to give them the best chance I can…What more can you do?July 28, 2017 at 8:44 pm #5843My box is in sun as well. I moved it to shade and realized the predator risk was just too great… Let’s keep each other posted!
July 28, 2017 at 9:31 pm #5846Cari, don’t really know “how hot it too hot”. I do know my boxes are all in full sun and we had an extremely hot 5 or 6 days this week – one getting up to 100 degrees. Then we got a real good rain (2-3 inches here & some places flooding) and it really cooled things down the past two days. My babies are due to fledge tomorrow & had thought one was dead but later found out it was okay. I have foam insulation on the box and they seem to have survived it. Will know tomorrow for sure if all have made it, but I don’t smell anything at the box so feel there are no dead ones. What kind of “sun shade” do you have? Yes, I have thought about moving my boxes but like you, the risk of predators was greater than the heat.

Remember that it can be a whole lot hotter in an unventilated box that gets no shade than it is outside.

Willamette Valley, OregonJuly 29, 2017 at 5:39 pm #5862Cari, I got the same notification on e-mail – they will want you to purchase a different account to be able to post. I don’t believe I will be doing this ($399 yearly!) – maybe someone on this forum has a different photo-sharing account that is free – if so, please let us know!

July 29, 2017 at 7:43 pm #5864When I wanted to post photos a few weeks ago, Brad suggested that I upload my photos at imgur.com and then just include the link in my post. It worked fine, and it didn’t cost anything! :-)
