I would love to see a pileated woodpecker. I have Downy woodpeckers and Red-bellied woodpeckers come to my feeders.

Nick, Carol, I have them (the pileated) in my back yard also but they have never approached the feeders. They stick to a couple of dead trees beyond the garden. I have the Downy and Red-bellied at the feeders like Carol. They are fun to watch as they climb around the vertical tube feeders instead of using the hopper feeder.

At my last house i used to have pileateds coming to a suet feeder on a tree trunk.

I would love to have red headed woodpeckers in the yard, i only see them occasionally when I’ve been out on fishing trips.

Chris…. cool picture of the Pileated woodpecker. I’m still waiting for one to show up in my yard. Heard they are quite impressive looking….13 inches high.

They are roughly the size of a crow so they attract your attention.

Supposedly each pair requires quite a few acres, but apparently they’ve adapted to smaller woodlots, traveling from one to the next.

I love those things! There is a pair that passes through here from time to time. Their prehistoric look is impressive and reminds me there is a dinosaur in their ancestry.
