I had checked the box on Tues and still had 5 eggs. I skipped the check on Wed, but this AM
when I looked in the box, I see that they have hatched, probably on Wed. I couldn’t tell if I have all five as they were all clustered together, but I’ll check again tomorrow with a flashlight to try to get a count.
The temperature has been brutal here in western MO for the last week or so, with a heat index around 105* on the day of the hatch. I’m hoping it cools down so those little babies will survive.
Mom and Pop are both feeding the little ones, so all looks well. Wish me luck!BZ
June 24, 2016 at 3:37 am #2467Best of luck to you & your blues, BZ! Is your box in the shade? If your box is in the sun, have you considered a heat shield? Forgive me if you’ve already addressed. Our temps in AL are similar. Hope it all works out!

June 24, 2016 at 8:11 pm #2470Thanks Nicole. Yes, I put a heat shield up about a week ago. I also have a wren guard, a sparrow
spooker, and a baffle on the pole for snakes and raccoons. My box has all of the OSHA requirements!BZ

That’s pretty funny right there.
Be careful with the flashlight. Some birds are born in dim places to protect developing eyes.

Atlanta, GAJune 25, 2016 at 2:58 am #2475I hear you, BZ! LOL. My box is in my small front yard in an HOA neighborhood. I know my neighbor’s have got to think I’m crazy with all the concoctions on/around my box.

June 26, 2016 at 9:19 pm #2483BZ, Gin reminded us of a good point about bright light on/in babies’ eyes. It has also been mentioned that it is best not to use a flash camera on young babies – Gin, is this before their eyes are open or after?
Anyway, congrats BZ on your successful 2nd fledging here in Missouri. My pair only have 3 eggs in their 2nd nest right now (had another 5 eggs in mid-May but mama left & eggs were not incubated, thus no good). First fledglings are here eating mostly on their own now – parents will probably kick them out after this 2nd brood are born or fledged.June 27, 2016 at 3:35 pm #2492BZ, Gin reminded us of a good point about bright light on/in babies’ eyes. From what I have read, it’s both. Eyelids are thin and don’t protect eyes from extremely bright light.
