It is exactly one week since the first 5 fledged. Mom and Dad have been hanging around to feed them (the babes are across the street high up in the pines). Dad started sitting on the box on Tuesday. By Wednesday Mom was moving bits of pine needles in. Checked today and the nest is almost complete!! I hope to have eggs by the weekend. Bring on Round 2!
Great news, Rich – yes 2nd nesting is in full swing here, also. 5 eggs are being incubated and I actually put the heat shield on the box yesterday, as heat index was supposed to be 100 degrees today.
1st egg laid late this morning. She is following her usual pattern of laying later in the day. Put the Spooker up while Dad literally sat on the fence not 5 feet from me! SO much for Social Distancing!! LOL!!
Rich, how late in morning does she usually lay? Mine are always pretty early, although I do not check until at least 11:00 am. Papa blues really do watch closely – better not do anything wrong he says!
She seems to lay anywhere between 10:30 to Noon. That is how she was with the first brood as well. To be safe I don’t check until about 2 pm. I checked once on the first brood and spooked her off the nest around 10:30 AM! I hear they can drop an egg out of the box if they get scared. Any other pair I have had nesting always laid really early in the AM. They have been bringing the Juvey’s to the mealworm feeder! That is fun!
Yes, Rich, I believe watching little ones learn to eat on their is loads of fun – probably of all the activities. Especially when those young ones just shake all over and beg for the worms from the parents.
Hi, Donna – glad your pair have a new nest after the fledging of your 5 from the 1st. Strange that she would stop at just 2 eggs – do you still see the papa blue around?
Hi Carol…this is a first time for me…a day was skipped and a 3rd egg appeared today…very strange as I have read that she only skips a day if it is cold…I wonder if something happened to the original female and if this is a different one? What are your thoughts?
Donna, I have had a mama bluebird skip a day once in a great while, probably happened only 2 or 3 times in all these years. (I have never heard about skipping a day only when it is cold, but then maybe I just never heard anyone talk about this). I Would bet that it is the original mama of 1st eggs.
