Well, this morning I didn’t see mama blue come to mealworm feeder, and I decided to sit & watch box with my morning coffee. Papa blue was around the nestbox all morning, but I witnessed him fighting with another bird – had him on the ground & going at it furiously – I couldn’t see what the other bird was. This happened a couple different times – then he started going to the hole of the box, then off, then on the hole & off, not bring in any food to incubating mama, just on hole looking in & off. Then I saw him and another female on a different box – it did not look like same mama bird – this was a bigger one I think. Anyway I watched some more on the box with eggs & never did see mama come off nest. So I decided to look inside – eggs were there intact but mama was not there. Two other times when we had checked box she was inside and did not get off eggs. I’m beginning to think something happened to her between yesterday and today. I guess time will tell – what was I saying in a different thread about all this fun AND stress? I did not check grounds to see if she was killed by this other bird or what but am going to do this as soon as it warms up a bit. Boy or boy!!

Later this morning I saw them both at the box with eggs there – mama was going TO (not inside) the box hole and papa was fluttering around not letting her go in. They did this for quite come time. Then they both went to this other box (which I thought at first was a different female but now believe it was the same mama). After a couple of hours (they were doing lots of wing-waving) I decided to check the other box to see if she was sitting, but she was not. I touched the eggs and they were cold. I did put the trick of putting a black dot on the top of each egg and will check tomorrow to see if they are being rotated. This pair was in and out of this different box all afternoon – hope they go ahead & begin a nest, as it is getting a little late for a first nesting. This has happened 1 or 2 other times here, with all eggs not being good & parents going elsewhere. Guess they can tell. I will leave the eggs there for several days yet, just to see.
