Whew, what a week – had horrible heat (one day reached 100 degrees) AND humidity. Thought one baby was dead but he was just playing “possum”. Well box late yesterday afternoon saw one peeking a lot in the hole. I thought the others maybe had already gone, but didn’t know. This morning parents were there to get worms but did not go to the box. After about 1 1/2 hours I went and checked – all gone – nest was just as neat and clean as when first made. No mites, ants, or anything. I gave it a good scrubbing and put it in a 5-gallon container with a little bleach in the water- mainly to lighten up the wood which had turned dark with age. This is a great way to give them a new look. I will rinse it well and put it up later. Don’t want it to be too “new” to them for next season. It’s been a trying season for everyone it seems. my 1st brood of 5 all died in the box – I believe from the extreme cool, wet weather we had back in April & May. 2nd brood all 5 fledged and this group is in the sky. Now all I have to do is order more mealwormss and feet the whole family the rest of the season! Let’s see – maybe I can win the lottery . . . . . Good luck to all you who still have babies left to fly away!
