4 more bluebirds in the sky

Today was an interesting day. I went out to out mealworms in the feeder anticipating the fledging of the 4 little ones in the nest box. As I backed away from the feeder the male parent zoomed into the feeder and picked up a mouthful of the worms. But instead of flying to the nest box he flew into a nearby maple tree and started feeling some fluttering little birds. I watched as the female bird did the same thing. After I came inside and got a cup of coffee, I watched thru by deck door window as they continued the feeding. A while later there was a lot of activity near the feeder. I counted 8 young bluebirds fluttering around the feeder cage, sometimes grabbing onto the cage and trying to get in. They never stopped flapping their wings, which would have allowed them to enter the cage. The female bird just watched the activity from a shepherd’s hook. A couple of the older young birds (probably from the late may fledge) did fly up to the nestbox but did not enter.
I checked the box after the birds flew off and found it empty. So all 4 fledged early in the morning. I will remove and clean the box tomorrow and put it back to see if they try for another brood before the end of the season.
