I also think it’s just their natural instinct and there’s probably not much you can do. My indoor cats sit by the door all day watching birds and chickmunks. Sometimes they even attack the door when a chipmunk runs across the porch. One cat got out into the yard once and promptly brought me back a “gift”. Fortunately it was only a mole.

I agree it depends on the cat. One of our ferals who I never deemed a threat was high up in one of my bushes today…no doubt up to no good!
