The bluebirds are around. I’ve observed them on the fence, on the arms of the feeder poll, and, rarely, actually on the feeder. A family member has observed a male, or different males, entering the nest box. But they are not a day-to-day regular presence in the yard. And as they do, they are only in a spot for a moment, not lingering but a few seconds.
As an aside, there are a lot of berries still on the Beautyberry. Last year the Mockingbirds cleaned them out. Maybe there will be some for the Bluebirds if they get really hungry.
Berries are just now coming in on the Wax Myrtle. This is supposed to be a highly valued food source for birds in the winter. But mine is still a small bush. I’ll try to catch a bird feeding on them. Don’t know yet if the Bluebirds eat them.
The Passion Vine has been absolutely stripped by the Gulf Fritillary caterpillars. The caterpillars are gone now and some new leaves are coming out, and new plants are coming up where the vine has spread underground. Still many butterflies (and bees) feeding on the flowers. There is fruit on the ground. Don’t know if any critters have been feeding on the fruit. I thought squirrels might, but haven’t observed it.
