Today I found all 5 of my bluebird eggs destroyed and on the ground. The mother had been sitting on them. In 6 years this has never happened. Should I assume it was a wren? Should I remove the nest and hope they start over nesting?
April 16, 2016 at 2:24 pm #1478It could be a house sparrow or a wren. You can leave the nest or remove it. I tend to remove the nests but maybe she would start quickly laying again if you left it. It’s harped to know. I’m so sorry. I know it’s heart breaking. You really need to figure out who the culprit is to try to avoid this in the future. Do you have house wrens around?

April 16, 2016 at 3:01 pm #1480Hi, I have not seen any wrens or sparrows in the area. I do have 2 tree swallows but they seem to get along fine with the bluebirds. I have removed the nest and have two boxes. The bluebirds look like they may be interested in nesting in the other box…I am keeping my fingers crossed.
April 16, 2016 at 6:06 pm #1490I am thinking HOWR in this case. A HOSP would be singing like crazy on top of that box is what I’m thinking. What I would do is give them a wren guard next time. HOWR are sneaky.

April 18, 2016 at 9:22 am #1509I am on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. The good news is that the bluebirds are busy building a nest in my other house. I will try to keep HOWR and HOSP away.

April 23, 2016 at 8:38 am #1591Well, the wrens are here in Missouri – DH saw one and I then heard one this past week. I put up the wren guard the very next day after the spooker went up after the 2nd egg. Now 5 eggs are being incubated. It’s amazing how that mama bird just swoops under the guard & into the box – she knows the life of those future baby birds is in her “hands”. It was a little awkward for her the 1st time but soon was very graceful about it. Keeping fingers & toes crossed until hatch day!! Hope everyone has a good season – isn’t this fun (and maybe a little stressful)!!!
