After watching the weather jump from cold to warm temperatures, and then go back colder that before, I was concerned that the birds would not start to build nests until late may – as they did last year. But after a week of 80+ degree weather the week before last, my pair started their nest 6 days ago and now I have 3 eggs in the nest.

Nice picture David……..Do you have to worry about freezing nights in VA???

      Good Luck,

Thank you Judy. We are having mid-40′ t0 high 50 degree night right now. I see a couple of 38 degree nights next week but mid 40’s after that. I think we might be out of the freezing temps now. At least I hope so. I do have a foam “insulator cover” ready in case it is needed.

Congrats, David – beautiful sight! I’m sure glad some here are having good luck with eggs. I’m SO jealous! Yes, we always need to be prepared with those foam insulator covers – they do work. Right now around 7:00 a.m. we have 29 degrees – I had to cover all my newly planted annual flowers & clematis vines yesterday afternoon – sure glad.

Thank you Carol. I am sure that as your weather warms up, the Bluebirds will be back. Mine took a while before they started to build.

And then there were 4. This is the first time that I have notices more than 1 egg with a white spot on it.

So exciting, let’s hope you get #5 tomorrow. Do you think it’s the same pair you had last season? Happy Birding.

Yes, Judy, they appear to be the same pair. I think that they were with me all winter as I had 3 or 4 bluebirds at my nut and seed feeder. I did see the male chase off one male and possibly the second female about a month ago. He also shut down a pair of HOSP. I have not seen them since that day, but I am ready if they return.

Great that you have the same pair. Did you get another egg today? We’re still having a cold spell, saw some snow coming down….mama blue was peeping out of the box. Crazy spring weather.

We have 5 now. I will check the box again later to see if there is another as the other Dave found in his nest.

We have 5 little ones in the box. Must have hatched yesterday as it rained all day and I did not check the box. Moma bird is a very persistent “dive bomber. She flies right at my face but always pulls off at about 6 feet away.

Congrats, David – although newborns aren’t really pretty, they will be beautiful in a few days! And sounds like mama is doing great – protecting those newborns!
