I’m watching and waiting……I’ve had my two bluebird houses out for about a week. I haven’t seen any action. The good news is no HOSP has tried to claim one. This year I’m trying the Woodcraft house sparrow shields on both. So far so good. Just wondering if others in Michigan are seeing the blues house hunting or have had good luck with the HOSP shields. Happy birding.
Hi, Blue Diamonds. I’m in NW Ohio and my bluebirds have already claimed their box. They are here all winter though. So should be really soon for you. The only problem with the shield or any other determent (is that the right word?), is the house sparrows fear of it will wear off so You need to remove it after the nesting is over and put it up again next nesting.
Today was the first time I saw a bluebird in my yard this season. It was a lone male looking at the BB boxes. Super exciting. He returned later in the afternoon sitting on a shepherds hook checking out the yard. I hope to have a successful nest this season. I have a feeder with dried mealworms out, but last year they didn’t seem to care for them. Anyone having luck with the dried mealworms? Thank you. Judy-Michigan
I have no luck with dried mealworms but many people do. Did you rehydrate them by soaking in warm water for a minute or so? Some people do that and some people just feed them dry.
