Hi! It’s been years since I’ve posted here, but I made a rookie mistake this morning when I was checking on my baby blues. I knew they were close to fledging so I should have been more careful. Anyway, one of them was up against the access door when I opened it up. It looked like his leg would be caught if I closed the access door, so I picked him up and moved him in further. He woke up as I moved him and then when I sat him down, he just flew right out of the access door! He flew really well, but I wasn’t expecting him to do that.
So I’m worried now that the parents won’t find him to feed him. I’m sure he hasn’t gone that far, but wondered if anyone could offer any reassurances to me? He is a healthy baby as are his other 2 siblings in the nest.
Thanks for any advice or assurances.Miriam
May 12, 2024 at 8:56 am #27638If he flew really well then I really believe the parents will find him. He’ll call out to them over and over again. I still make that mistake occasionally. But when I’ve done it they weren’t ready to fly and that is a worse mistake.
Do you keep track when the eggs were laid, when they are supposed to hatch and then fledge? That helps. But I do that and sometimes I still make mistakes like this so I get it.Tammy
May 12, 2024 at 9:17 am #27639Mariam, were you a part of our group when it was on Yuku and later changed to Tapatalk with the user name newbabyblue? You had purple martins and had issues back then with tree swallows taking over your bluebird boxes?
It is that another person.Tammy
May 13, 2024 at 6:48 am #27644Tammy – Yes, I’m the same one from all those years ago! I remember you too! I’ve been controlling the HOSP all year and keeping all my native birds safe.
I do keep track of egg laying and hatching so I know they were due to fledge any day now. They laid 5 eggs and 5 actually hatched! But now there are only 3 good sized and healthy looking babies. Well, two still in the nest and the one, the biggest one, that flew out yesterday. Parents are still very attentive to the box, so the others have yet to fledge, but soon I’m sure.
Thanks for the reassurance that the parents will find the escapee!

May 15, 2024 at 11:13 pm #27649I thought I wrote back but obviously I didn’t press submit. I didn’t realize who you were when I asked about keeping records, otherwise I wouldn’t’ have asked!
Did they all leave?
I’ve been in that boat before. Once one flew out into a cornfield. No way could I find it. And then last year I opened a box of baby blues without checking dates on my little trail. I had to stuff them back in and of course they never stay in after that so I put a hole reducer on but Momma wouldn’t feed them so I finally took it off the next morning and just left ….I couldn’t watch. But I think that gave them enough time.
And then on the trail the previous year I did the same thing to tree swallows. That was an awful experience.Tammy
