When I first got into Bluebirding 8 or 9 years ago, I was having quite a problem with house sparrows in my BB box. I ordered a Van Ert trap and put up a second box nearby, hopefully to be used as a ‘trap’ box. It was quite successful, and I eliminated quite a few house sparrows that season. Over the years the BB have chosen one box or the other. The boxes are too close (about 60 ft.) for BB to inhabit both boxes. NOW to the reason for this post. This year I have been watching a pair sitting on one box and then the other, apparently trying to decide which to chose. I have been checking regularly, and yesterday I found a completed nest prepared and ready in box #1. Great!
So then I went to look in box #2, and to my surprise, I found a BB egg lying on the bare floor of an otherwise empty box ! My question is: Should I just let it be, or move the egg into the nest of box #1 ? ? Your suggestions and advice would be appreciated. Thanks!April 30, 2025 at 10:58 am #28051Lol! That’s so weird.
April 30, 2025 at 8:08 pm #28055That is strange. Maybe Tammie can help us out here. I am not sure about the legality of the issue, but I would put the egg over in the nest and see if she accepts the move. I have never seen an egg in an empty nest box. Not sure how healthy that would be for the young hatchlings.

Stafford, VAMay 1, 2025 at 8:51 pm #28061That’s tricky. Could you make a nest for that box and put the egg in it? And then wait to see where she lays the second egg? Just put some dried grass in it and set the egg on top. I like David’s idea of moving the egg but maybe just wait a day to see where she lays the next egg.??? I think you can’t go wrong with whatever you decide. You could always move the egg back if she keeps laying in the box without a nest.
