I’ve had a couple of bluebird couples checking out my nest boxes a lot lately. I don’t remember this happening in the fall when I’ve had nest boxes in the past. I put one up again last spring.

Today one of the male bluebirds was sitting on the roof with a piece of nesting material. He was trying to take it into the house when I went out to take the picture. I think I might have bothered him, and he flew away.

I’m planning on replacing this nest box with a new one with a flat roof so that I can use a wren guard. I hope this won’t discourage them.

I’ve noticed my bluebirds also checking out the nestboxes lately. I believe this is just their way of letting all other birds know “this is my box”, but then again I can’t understand “bluebird” language. Hope your new boxes work for you next season.

Thank you Carol. I just hope it won’t discourage them when I switch out the box.

Interesting. This is the first time I have seen sparrows (trying to) building nests in the late fall. I don’t recall ever seeing that.

philyblues, it is bluebirds that are checking the box out, not sparrows. I’ve seen them going in since but not with nesting material. I wonder if they’re using them at night to keep warm.

Yeah I just found it interesting birds building nests that late.
