Can someone tell me the most active time of day for BBs after migrating and prior to building a nest?
I’ve just seen my first male of the season and the trails I’ve created are a ways from home. I’d like to know the best time for the best chance of seeing activity.
Where are you from Tim? I’m in North West Ohio and mine start picking out their nesting location in February or even earlier sometimes and they start building soon after that. I have a trio on a walking path and I already have eggs or nestlings in most of my boxes. I’ve been away from 2 weeks and I think some of my nestlings should fledge in a couple of days. Yours should have started earlier if you are at all south of me.
Tim,
I have found mornings to be the best time of day to see the bluebirds. Especially when they’re hunting for nest sites. Also the female bluebirds tend to build their nest in the mornings mostly. Of course once there’s babies in the nest box you will see both male and female bluebird actively feeding them from dawn to dusk.
Tammy, We are on the WI/MI border. Significantly more north than NW Ohio. Only migrating blues here and they seem to arrive with the wrens and swallows. Wren have been here since last week and are nesting in our yard. No swallows seen yet but they are probably here.
Dana, thanks for the info. I visited this morning and was very happy to see not only the male I saw last night but a female hauling nest materials into the nest box. Happy, happy and it’s my birthday so extra special.
