Oh my gosh………Looked out the window this morning with binoculars about 7:00am, saw 5 baby bluebirds hopping in the grass. Ugh……they were sitting targets for the hawk, bluejays and crows. You name it we have the predators. So, I put on a pair of gloves and scooped them up one by one. I tried to place the 1st one in a tree, but it would not stay and fell to the ground. After that I moved them all to the landscaped area by the house so they could at least hide under shrub and bushes. I have no clue why they fledged early today Friday, fledge date is Sunday. So, they fledged 2 days early. Does anyone know how long it will take for them to be able to fly? I’m going to feed live mealworms this evening and watch where the parents take them.

May 17, 2024 at 4:34 pm #27661Oh Goodness, I don’t have the answer because I’ve never had them leave the nest box unless they fly straight to a tree. Hoping they have made progress since your post.
May 17, 2024 at 9:07 pm #27663I have not seen them since this morning. I heard a lot of calling from momma blue and papa blue today. I fed them live mealworms this evening trying to see where they were taking them. I could not tell, they would head off one way and return from another direction. My only hope is they were able to get them all together. Anyone know if they could learn to fly within a 12 hour span?

May 18, 2024 at 11:35 am #27665This morning about 10:00am I saw 1 of the bluebird chicks sitting on top of the bluebird box baffle! Lol, l’m sure the parents did not put it there, so they have learned to fly quickly. Yay‼️

May 18, 2024 at 4:41 pm #27668It sounds like a happy ending. yes, YAY Thats a very interesting fledge. You actually got to pick up a baby bluebird. thats neat.
May 19, 2024 at 9:27 am #27673I feel like a day can make a huge difference in whether they can fly. At least that’s what I’ve noticed when I’ve had these issues so hopefully they are fine. It sounds like they are. That’s one of the most stressful situations for me!!!

May 19, 2024 at 10:56 pm #27679All seems to be well now. Parents have them across to street in the trees. I give them live mealworms twice a day and that is where they take them.
This was my 1st experience with an early fledge. I have to say they were so cute and easy to catch. When I would get near one it would tuck its head down like they do in the nest. Making it very easy to scoop up. Fluffy little balls of feathers. Happy I was able to help.
