My suburban Philly blues fledged this past weekend! I had a scare checking the box since I saw a sparrow perched on top when I arrived! Expecting to find dead nestlings to my relief the nest was empty. I have no idea where the babies went.Do I have a chance for a second nesting? How soon will they look for a new box if so? Will the babies hang around the area for long?

I cleaned my box out immediately after the first fledge. That was 3 weeks ago and they started to build again within the 3 week time frame so hopefully! The babies usually stick around all summer and sometimes help feeding the new clutch. Here’s hoping you get another! Do you have a Sparrow Spooker? I just had a very bad experience not putting mine up (lost an egg and now not sure if they will abandon :( )

You should have a chance for a 2nd nesting. My babies fledged yesterday and I cleaned out box and it is ready for them to go again. They are kind of an odd couple, get started late, plus build 2 or 3 extra nests, etc. I’m hoping for a 2nd. Congrats on your fledgling everyone.

I’m in the suburbs of Philly.

My sole baby blue fledged about 3+ weeks ago, disappeared for 2 weeks somewhere, and then reappeared, usually accompanying dad and begging to be fed. It was quite a treat to watch. The pics I have are priceless.

The day he fledged I cleaned out the nest box. They built another nest in the same box the next day in under 8 hours, in addition to one they built in one of my woodpecker boxes a few days earlier before the nestling fledged. They looked to be in quite a hurry to get going on round 2.

Since then(22 days after the second nest was built), there are no eggs. The parents are still around.nthe father goes in and out of the box as if to look for eggs only to find none. The mother will go in and stay for 15 minutes or so in the morning, but still no eggs. It’s quite disappointing. Hopefully the female starts round 2 soon.

In the meantime, I’ve got 6 baby swallow nestlings providing me entertainment.
