Well, I checked my BB box today and found one blue egg in it – I was hoping they would wait a little longer, but that feeling was there. It is supposed to be 32 degrees tonight and in the 30’s next few days (during the nighttime). I am contemplating if I need to put my styfoams around the box WITHOUT the spacers, to keep it warmer and not cooler. Any ideas? This will be the earliest ever for my BB eggs – usually at least early April.

Congratulations Carol. I am still waiting for the weather to warm and stay above freezing. Blues at the feeders but no nest as of today

Update – have 4 beautiful blue eggs – thought mama was going to quit and start incubating, but when I checked late this afternoon she was not on the nest, so believe it is going to be 5 eggs by tomorrow. The pair come to my suet feeders faithfully, as do the juncos, white-crowned sparrows and of course, HOSP. Even have had cardinals wedge their way into the cage feeder, but this is very seldom. Are you still “manufacturing” your mealworms, David? I have some in my fridge waiting to be put out when it warms up for good. When I ordered them I forgot to tell the supplier that I wanted to wait a week or so, just needed to get the order in, but they went ahead & shipped. I take them out about every 9 or 10 days to feed. They are growing pretty good.

Good luck on the early nesting Carol.
Yes, I am still raising the mealworms My chimney for the wood stove needed to be repaired and that wasn’t completed until a month ago so the basement was too cold for good beetle production. I lost a whole drawer of beetles (around 7000) and was not able to get them restarted until 2 weeks ago. I wasn’t able to do my supply venture for the Wild Birds Unlimited store and am trying to get that project back online.
Still waiting for the blues to set up the nest. Still have another week of 30 degree nights.

David, I have wondered all winter about your mealworm farm. Have to tell you that it even came up at holiday visits!! My husband’s Aunt Sara always includes bluebirds in our holiday visits. She wanted to know if I was going to grow any mealyworms (her word) this year. I told her about your production system. I’m so happy that is turning into a venture for you. Just think of all the bluebirds you’ll help feed and grow!! It’s so amazing.
