Well, my pair of blues are anxious for a new nest (fledglings are about 6 days old)- the two of them keep going from one nestbox to another, checking it out. He will get on the hole, then go inside and look around, and then mama blue will get her chance to see “if she likes this one.” They are checking out two boxes which are closer to my house and one is a new Gilbertson which is a little larger than my others. Which one will they pick????????????????
May 18, 2020 at 9:21 am #8202Where did you get your new Gilbertson? Does it have the bar in the opening?

May 18, 2020 at 12:12 pm #8207Tammy, I said the wrong thing – it is NOT a Gilbertson but a Gilwood, which we make ourselves. I have no desire to have a metal box (I believe Gilbertson is metal?)
May 18, 2020 at 12:49 pm #8210I hope they pick your new box with the larger bottom. It will be interesting to see which they choose. We should know in the next few days.

May 30, 2020 at 9:45 pm #8290Tammy, I ordered a Gilbertson from Etsy last year for my sister. It used little nails to hold the house in place, which I just couldn’t imagine trying to keep track of when checking the nest. The guy said he had to use little nails because the Gilbertson is patented. I couldn’t find the regular kind last year.
Have they chosen a house yet, Carol? It’s so fun to watch the process through your words!!
May 30, 2020 at 10:46 pm #8291Julie, no they have not began a nest yet – they still check on this one newer house all the time, but I believe it has been too wet, no dry grass to build. However, it was quite a bit warmer and also should be tomorrow, so maybe they will find something dry. Better hurry up, grandma is getting tired of this nonsense!
June 1, 2020 at 8:24 pm #8295Well, they heard me and slipped an egg in on Saturday, a 2nd one Sunday and 3rd egg today, Monday. I have been watching this nest quite a lot, since it has been built about 10-14 days and never saw much activity. Anyway, I have 3 new BB eggs, wren guard put on 1st, and then today installed the sparrow spooker – with papa watching our every move. But she accepted the wren guard well and I’m sure she will the spooker, also. Seems like the fledglings from 1st nesting have disappeared for a while, but I’m sure they will return. Sometimes parents chase them off to protect food for new babies. And sometimes they actually help feed their siblings! (I have not had this happen, however)
June 1, 2020 at 8:40 pm #8298Good news Carol! Did they choose your new box, the same box as 1st nesting or a different one? This could be a 3 nesting year for you. So, the wrens are back? Grrrr…..they are kind of cute, but cause a lot of trouble. I can hear them all over our neighborhood. So far so good here.

June 1, 2020 at 9:42 pm #8299Judy, they did not choose my new box, it is a different one from lst nesting, but along the very back of my yard on opposite side as the 1st. I ALMOST MESSED THIS ONE UP – this nest has been built quite a while, but I never saw any action at it – just a nice nest but after almost two weeks I thought the blues (maybe a different pair) had abandoned it. Lesson learned – don’t get in any hurry and let things alone until absolutely sure! Yes, I will probably have 3 broods this year. And yes, the wrens are back – I hear them all the time and have taken out a few sticks from one particular box (the new one we just put up)! HOSP are still around, also – sure glad I have 4 boxes up – sure works as a decoy to keep them away from my blues’ nest. Glad things are going well for you.
