Hello, I’m new here and wanted to share my experience. I’ve been making 4” Gilbertson style birdhouses for awhile now but have decided to change to 6” pvc pipe. The reason is that a few weeks ago a house sparrow destroyed five bluebird eggs in a 4”. So I thought if a hosp is going to take over a 4” anyway, why not make it 6”? I made a 6” and now have a bluebird nest with the second egg laid this morning. After the first egg was laid I put a sparrow spooker above.

I think the bluebirds like being inside the 6” house at the same time. I need to locate thinner pvc pipe because the 6” I’ve found is on the thick side at 5/16”. Between my brothers and I, we have 7 inside birdhouse cameras. Only one has bb’s so far. I’d post a pic but not sure how to do that yet.

        Welcome Bill.

I think the spooker should prevent the sparrows. This is only my second year of using them, and so far not being bothered with the sparrows. More room in the nest sounds like a good idea.

I’d like to see pictures of your birdhouse camera set up. To post pictures here, ive been using an app called imgur, its just a third party website you can upload your picture to, and cut and paste the link into your message.

        Thanks,

Welcome, Bill like I’ve mentioned we are here to help each other and learn from experiences. This is my 13th year of bluebirding and have had nests all those years, most of the time 3 each season, and once in a while only 2. Right now my pair have two new eggs in nest #3 – I’ve been keeping an eye on it closely the past few days because I thought they were in a big hurry – nest #2 only fledged a week ago and they built in 5 days. We have made all of our boxes, first ones only 4×4 inches – which I had for several years. Then we started making Gilwood boxes with a just little larger floor space because most of the time I had 5 eggs and I thought the babies were too crowded with 5 so we just went a little larger, but not too much – according to most info they prefer a fairly small floor area, but different areas/weather of this big world could make a difference. Anyway, good luck and again, Welcome.

Thanks Chris and Carol for the welcome. I’m a little jealous that you have bluebirds at your place. I live in a small town and have only seen them stop by to look in the birdhouse once on camera for the past two years. My brother and sister have them and they’re not too far away.

I noticed that too about the babies being crowded and with the hosp actions telling me they will still come in to kill in a 4” pvc, it gave me another reason to experiment with the 6” size. So far it is working great. The reason I went to pvc is that it is low maintenance and should last a long time. I have a 25 second or so video of the mother singing inside of the 6” birdhouse. I can’t be sure but it sounded like she approves 🙂

I’m in the process of checking out the Imgur photo site so maybe I can link something.
            Thanks, Bill

I just submitted 4 links to the Imgur site but it didn’t post here. Does it usually post right away or does it take awhile?

When you go to your photo in imgur, there are a whole bunch of urls to the right.

On the one that says BBCode, click copy.

Then on bluebird nut, at the top of the message bar click IMG, and paste the img url into that box. When you hit return, you will see a whole bunch of text in your message, but when you post the message, you will see the photo. Then you can go back and edit the message if you need to.

                              Thanks Chris.

It doesn’t look like the sound works with the video unless I’m missing a setting.

I did a test copy with the sound on but didn’t work.
