I was thinking it is long overdue for aome sort of movement to educate the general public on bluebird protection and the scourge of HOSP. There is aucha lack of knowledgw out there. I was thinking a very simple thing we could do is print up some small notes to roll up and stick in every box we see in the stores. Maybe do something on Instagram too? Thoughts? Anyone have some short message we could pit on these notes? Maybe something like: “STOP. PLEASE READ. BLUEBIRDS NEED YOUR HELP! Please do not allow Engliah house sparrows [picture] to nest in this box. They are a great danger to our North American Box nesting bird species and threaten their survival. Please take out their nests and even eggs if you have to. Read more here: address here for instagram or website

Phillyblues…….sounds like a great idea to me‼️ There are so many folks that purchase bluebird boxes and are happy to have any bird including House Sparrows build a nest. Grrrr.

Thanks Judy…and who can blame them? There is no public education like there is with other problems like lanterflies…when I first started getting into birds I was shocked that sparrows were that nasty. I even didn’t know how bad until I saw it firsthand for the first time. Shocked me. I knew starlings were bad but not little brown birds. Well if anyone wants to help do their part I am going to print something up for me and get an instagram page going.

Its for that reason i am hesitant to give birdhouses as gifts, i.e., i know sparrows will nest in them and folks wont have the heart to tear the nests out.

I have trouble even describing what bluebirds are, everyone knows what a blue jay is but a bluebird not so much.

Same. They don’t know they even exist. People have no idea what they are missing out on if they would just remove sparrows from their neighborhood.
