One hatchling as of this afternoon. There were still five unhatched eggs as of yesterday. I figure today is hatch day.
I waited as usual to observe the female leave the nest box before checking. I saw the female peeping out and then she pulled back in. The the male came to the nest box and looked in, after which the female came out and exited the nest box
I see four eggs and the one hatchling. But I don’t see any movement. I’m not sure what I should see at this point. I expected to see some movement. I’m also expecting to now see the birds frequently coming and going to feed the hatchlings.
One day at a time.
March 15, 2025 at 2:40 pm #27843If there is a way to edit a post, I can’t figure it out. But I should clarify that I only looked in the nest box for a few seconds.
I’ve since done some reading and understand movement at this stage is very limited. I also checked with my neighbor who has been though this many times now and she didn’t seem concerned. She told me that they are good at being still and quiet. I hope that’s it.
Anyway, I’ll be visiting the nest box again tomorrow afternoon and will learn more then.
(I see the Edit link now. It must time out and disappear after a time for older posts.)

March 15, 2025 at 10:14 pm #27845The edit button should always be available. You just must not have noticed it before.
Glad you saw one baby. They don’t move hardly at all when they are newly hatched. But will be begging for food when you open the box soon. Do some clicking with your mouth or kissing sounds and see what happens tomorrow or whenever you check again.Tammy
March 16, 2025 at 8:00 am #27846I’ll update after the afternoon visit today. Your answer is reassuring. Fingers crossed.
The edit button, look upward in this thread at your posts. I only see REPLY and QUOTE followed by the post # on older posts. The EDIT link is right to the left of REPLY on my new posts. If you see EDIT on your older posts, I’ll try some troubleshooting (different browser, clear cache and cookies, turn off VPN …).
March 16, 2025 at 8:08 am #27847Edit is the first one. It’s right by the date and time for me. If I’m on my phone on portrait mode it doesn’t show very well because the word is divided. On landscape mode it’s easy to see.

March 16, 2025 at 9:34 am #27848No biggie. I tried the usual: cleared browser data, turned off VPN, tried different browsers (Safari and Edge, both on MacBook and on iPhone). It is the same. I only see EDIT on my current post, and I assume it times out. It is only a curiosity to me.
EDIT: For Info, I just noticed there is an edit link at the bottom of the page. As a test, I clicked on the post number of one of my earlier posts and then scrolled down and clicked the EDIT link. I get the error message Sorry, you are not allowed to edit this item.. Could be a membership status thing?
March 16, 2025 at 10:16 am #27851Maybe it is something that I can only see. I asked Cher to clarify. Are you using a computer/laptop or your phone?

March 16, 2025 at 10:24 am #27853I use a MacBook Air and an iPhone, and usually the Safari browser, depending. As I say, I tried both devices and both browsers, no difference as far as EDIT on my previous posts.
Don’t spend a lot of time on this. It started as a curiosity and at this point I don’t think anything is broken.

March 16, 2025 at 11:24 am #27855Trust me, I’m not spending hardly any time on it. I’m just curious too.
I think it’s probably as you suggested. Members only have a certain amount of time to edit. I’m guessing this is something I knew at one time but forgot. :)
I’m guessing that’s for a reason. If something questionable (rude, mean, etc) is said the person can’t rewrite what they said before the admins have a chance to see it. Or sometimes people change their post and therefore none of the comments under it make any sense.-

March 16, 2025 at 12:36 pm #27858Two hatchlings and three eggs just now. And I saw movement.
March 16, 2025 at 9:08 pm #27859Make sure to trap any sparrows even though things are going well. I lost a whole nets of fledglings the very day they were about to fly out. Like Tammy says it was unexpected and seemingly out of nowhere. I have lost adult bluebirdsa, chickadees and tree swallows to these vermin
March 16, 2025 at 10:02 pm #27861Yay on your little hatchlings.
Good advice from phillyblues!Tammy
March 29, 2025 at 10:23 am #27865So, I only had two of the five eggs hatch. I’m wondering about that, wondering why the three didn’t hatch, and also wondering if I was supposed to remove the unhatched eggs when it was clear they would not hatch. In keeping with he general principle of not interfering, I decided to leave the eggs alone.
I’ve been checking nearly everyday, but sometime miss a day. By the calendar, eyes should have started to open days ago. When I checked yesterday, I could see the head and beak of one of the young, but didn’t see open eyes.
Also by the calendar, around now is when I should stop checking the nest to avoid causing the young to fledge early. Again, wondering. If the eyes haven’t opened, shouldn’t I still check the nest?
I haven’t observed the young begging to be fed, though I’ve been quiet and very brief when I check the nest.
The young are growing. I can see the feathers have filled in. A wing was clearly visible on the one where the head and beak was visible. I know they are moving because their positions have changed between observations.
The parents are still coming and going, and very frequently. The male is entering the nest box where in the past he would only land on the opening and peer inside. With binoculars I can see the birds carrying what look like insects. They also carry something away from the nest sometime, which I assume is waste from the young.
So, to summarize my big thought: Much of this has not gone the way I expected. I thought I would see the young sitting up and begging, like one sees in pictures. Really, I thought I would see more movement. Every time I look the young are in a lump on top of each other, like they are sleeping. Anyway, one day at a time. I’m only an observer.
March 29, 2025 at 3:23 pm #27868You can remove the eggs now. If you leave them in, it normally doesn’t hurt anything, although 3 is a lot.
If the babies are 12 days old you need to stop monitoring. By day 13 for sure. You can just watch from a distance. You can only see them beg for food the first several days. And only if you click your tongue or make a noise with your mouth. At some point they know to have fear when they hear something that isn’t their parents and instead of begging for food they almost play dead. They stay really still.
Soon you’ll see them peeking out and then they will put not only their head out but also have their feet in the hole. Then you will know they are ready to fledge any time.Tammy
March 29, 2025 at 5:15 pm #27870Thanks. It is definitely time to stop checking, I guess, given the days since hatching.
The nest box is in my back yard, so I can sit on the porch and watch, and wait.
