Looking forward to attending the BRAW convention (Bluebird Restoration Association of Wisconsin) at the Horicon Marsh visitor center on Saturday. I attended the Michigan Bluebird Assoc. event in Ann Arbor two years ago and really enjoyed the speakers (especially Stan Tekiela) and the bluebird experts. BRAW’s lineup looks to be very interesting this year.

If your area has a bluebird fest/convention/gathering think about attending and supporting their work. And if you have a chance to see Stan Tekiela, DO IT! He is an awesome speaker and very knowledgeable about the natural world.

Hi Tammy. It was a good trip. I camped about five minutes away at a county park campground called Ledge County Park. Part of the Niagara Escarpment with ledge top views of Horicon Wildlife Refuge. Very nice campground.

The convention was a great time. Speakers included a BRAW member, Jay Utley, who has arrangements with 14 cemeteries in his area of the state where he monitors bluebird nest boxes. It was very interesting listening to him as I sought permission to put up nest boxes in the cemetery in my town and was turned down. He had some good ideas on how to approach a rural cemetery official to get permission.

A wildlife photographer from Fond Du Lac, WI talked about his challenges as a disabled person to get access to many east and central Wisconsin birding locations. Beautiful photography. His specialty is macro photography and he had some really interesting shots.

And finally, Hillary Neff, the president of the Wisconsin Falconry Association talked about falconry in the state as well as trips to central Europe and several areas of central Asia. One question asked was about what can we do with House Sparrows that are dispatched during bluebird monitoring. She encouraged BRAW members to contact bird rescues to dispose of the carcasses. For those having a hard time dispatching HOSPs that might help support the effort.

BRAW has a much smaller convention compared to Michigan’s which I attended in 2024. Still very interesting.
