No raccoon in the trap but momma was nearby chasing the titmice away. 2 eggs today!
July 7, 2017 at 11:20 pm #5409Well, use cat food in the traps. They love it! I’ve gone 15 years without a raccoon but now have one since I let the feral cat lady feed them in my front yard.
July 8, 2017 at 7:41 am #5410My neighbor actually told me that yesterday so I put some in it. 3 BB eggs as of yesterday.
July 8, 2017 at 5:16 pm #5418It’s another sad day 😭 The raccoon returned, ate all the cat food without being caught, and ate all the eggs but one somehow. I left the nest and egg as they didn’t seem damaged. Both bluebirds were nearby. I want to move the two houses over to the metal fence posts that are connected by barbed wire and maybe grease them? But not sure how to attach the box to the metal fence post. Also, will the bluebirds get fed up and quit trying to nest in my area? I sure hope not! I’ve had it with these raccoons and it is my mission to catch them. On a happy note, the Mockingbird nest is up to 4 eggs and mom was on them when I walked by. Hopefully I’ll finally get to see a baby bird soon.
July 8, 2017 at 6:15 pm #5422Just bought some round metal poles, gunna try to mount the houses with some u bolts. Also got grease. I hope this works. Next year I’ll buy the stovepipes too.
July 8, 2017 at 8:31 pm #5423Whitney, I think that should work just fine. I’m glad you did it. I started years ago with one hanging from a tree that I just bought as a decoration. Then lo and behold bluebirds loved and used it for years even though it was all wrong, tin roof, perch, no side vents. Fledged 2 or 3 every year until a snake found it. Then i got super serious with research and found sialis and this site.
Now my pole is armored like crazy.
I still lost my first nesting due to HOWR as I had never given them a thought.
It’s constant live and learn….July 8, 2017 at 8:32 pm #5424What can you do with a raccoon once you trap it though? Relocate?
July 8, 2017 at 8:34 pm #5425I wish I could donate my stinky rotten egg that didnt hatch! I had it and the nest on my outside table today in a storm and it broke and it was horrible. Yuck!
July 9, 2017 at 10:23 am #5430Just checked the trap and I caught the culprit. Yeah I’ll take him down to the lake and let him go there. Gunna set up the poles and stuff after work today and hopefully they will try again.
July 9, 2017 at 5:27 pm #5433How far away are you taking him? It needs to be a long way off.

Atlanta, GAJuly 9, 2017 at 11:36 pm #5446I was amazed watching my front porch raccoon climb a tree last night. They are pretty amazing climbers. This was a flimsy Japanese Maple. A fence would be a piece of cake!
July 10, 2017 at 8:08 pm #5457We took him about 10 miles from the house so I really don’t think he will be back. And I got both houses mounted on metal round poles today and put a baffle on them and I have grease for the pole if the birds try to nest again. For now I’ll sit back and watch the wren and Mockingbird eggs. While I was out in the pasture putting up the boxes I saw 5 bluebirds all chasing each other around. They make me so happy!
July 10, 2017 at 8:18 pm #5458They are going in and out of both boxes already!
July 10, 2017 at 11:01 pm #5462Yay!!! So glad you got them off of the fence posts. Good luck!!
July 10, 2017 at 11:01 pm #5463Did you put them on your barbed wire fence post or a separate post. It’s really easy and you won’t regret doing it the right way. http://bluebirdnutcafe.yuku.com/topic/5934/How-I-install-a-nest-box#.WWQ_A7EpChA
