I am so happy for you!!! Congratulations!! Maybe spring is finally here!
I think “our” pair has settled on a box. The chickadees have been putting fur into the closest-by box, so they’re focused and the bluebirds seem to be ignoring them. The swallows started putting feathers into their box today. If I see evidence of a bluebird nest, I’ll be doing cartwheels! I plan to do my annual front garden path re-paving today–my “paving” = pine needles. So that should inspire the bluebirds!
April 29, 2022 at 8:42 am #24204Still no eggs. My pair completed the nest about a week ago. The weather has been absolutely miserably cold though. Is it common for egg laying delaying due to weather? I was thinking there would be 4 or 5 eggs by now.
April 29, 2022 at 7:51 pm #24211Yes, the weather could make a difference to some pairs. My silly pair started WAY early this year and I had to keep my fingers, toes and eyes crossed that they would make it through several freezes and miserable weather – and they did and have fledged already. Whew! I’m pretty sure you will get some eggs soon. Good luck.
April 29, 2022 at 10:46 pm #24215We’re having another freeze tonight over here in PA. It’s crazy. I did spy a chickadee egg today in their nest, and the tree swallows are finally building. Not sure if eggs are there or not. I can never tell with them due to all the feathers in the box. At least you have a bluebird nest!! We don’t have any right now. I think they’re nesting two yards up. I hope they come back…But yes, this spring has been crazy cold.
May 3, 2022 at 3:01 pm #24254Still no eggs and no sign of male or female. I wonder what happened. So depressing.
May 3, 2022 at 9:17 pm #24261We’re having down-in-the-dumps, too, at the moment. The blues are definitely nesting elsewhere, but we remain hopeful they’ll be here for Round 2 since the male visits a lot. The chickadee nest with the egg…the egg has now disappeared. Day 2 of their egg laying, the male bluebird went into the box. I was about to put on a hole reducer, too! So not sure what the chickadees are doing, altho’ they are surely around here constantly. I’ve checked the other Gilbertson, and there’s a chickadee nest on the go in there. The tree swallows are mating and egg laying now. In the other swallow box, there’s a lone feather, so evidence that someone was in there at one point. But no BLUES!!! So we have the blues, too….
May 3, 2022 at 9:19 pm #24263Have to say my neighbor came barreling across the yard toward me nearly shouting, “Where are our bluebirds?!” Last year they nested in the box that faces their patio, and they had a ball watching them. I told him the deck guys scared ’em off to the other neighbors. Then he looked worried and said, “Oh no, I hope they come back.” So many of us are vested in these wonderful birds!!
May 11, 2022 at 10:28 pm #24357Happy to report that this morning I saw the momma pop her head out of the box after several weeks of no sightings and an empty nest. I snapped a photo inside and we have our first egg of 22!
May 11, 2022 at 10:38 pm #24361That is the most beautiful sight!!! Hooray and good for you!!! ENJOY!!! I’m so happy for you.
May 13, 2022 at 8:33 am #24374Yes, beautiful sight – congrats!
May 13, 2022 at 9:11 am #24376Slowly but surely. I guess she’ll be laying another this morning? This is egg number two. Hope I didn’t disturb #3
May 13, 2022 at 10:24 am #24379Great news. It is going to be a late season for a lot of us this year.

Stafford, VAMay 21, 2022 at 8:55 pm #24464We have 4 now…
Weird I always thought 5 was the norm but I always seem to get 4.
May 22, 2022 at 3:51 pm #24468I usually get 4, too, Phillyblues. Hey, keep forgetting to ask you if you know about the PA Bluebird Society. They have a great newsletter. You can read the newsletters for free on the website– http://www.thebpsp.org
They publish year round, so you get to enjoy bluebird stuff in winter, which keeps me happy! I’ve never been to the annual conference. I just joined in 2020 when everything shut down.
May 25, 2022 at 8:57 am #24940Congrats, Philly Blues – I believe the norm is either 4 or 5 eggs. My first nesting this year which was extremely early was only 3 eggs – a first for me.
