Looked in the nestbox on Saturday and found 1 new egg. I was surprised as I hadn’t seen the 2 BB’s for almost a week after they finished the nest. It has been chilly in the evening so I figured they would wait until the warmer weekend. This morning there are 3 eggs.

What a soft cozy nest! Mine are always just old sticky pine straw! Congrats!

Congrats David!! Don’t know what happened to my bluebirds. The last week of March I saw a few strands of dry grass and was hopeful they would build a nest then the weather turned cold and they disappeared. I’ve only seen them a few times since (if it’s the same pair) at the mealworm feeder. I checked the box and no nest just the same few strands of grass in there. Past few days its been decent temps and weather in the 60’s and 70’s. I thought by now they would build a nest or another pair would come along and claim the nestbox. I’m kinda stumped. Any ideas? Anyone? – Dana

They could be waiting as our weather has been fickle for the past few weeks. I saw the beginning circle of grass 2 weeks before they built this nest, It seemed to go up in 2 days. On the other hand, they may have relocated. It is still early and they could still be lurking nearby.

Hi David, every now and then a male bluebird will check out my nestbox but no female in sight. I’m wondering if this is a new male without a mate yet. Keeping my fingers crossed he finds a mate and they move in to my nestbox soon.

If there is a male looking at the box there are probably other female birds lurking as well. the males seem to explore first before the female shows up. If this is a new male, he is trying to establish a territory. Good luk for the new season.

And now we have 5 eggs – a full house. By my calculation the eggs should hatch on April 26, with fledging around May 12.
