I am extremely alarmed by the use of a company called Mosquito Shield in every increasing numbers in my neighborhood! It used to be a few houses here and there but now it seems like a huge increase the past couple years! And my direct neighbors get it sprayed multiple times all summer!! Last year was the first year I didn’t get monarch caterpillars on my milkweed, my toads are go e that I had for 15-20 years! Praying mantis gone, ladybugs gone! I am finally attracting bluebirds and swallows but I fear there is nothing here to eat any longer and just want to scream. Anyone else dealing with this or know what can be done? It seems like spraying chemicals that are airborne should require neighbor consent! All of that ends up in our water too for sure. I don’t want that crap anywhere near me or my critters! It is beyond frustrating.

I don’t have any good ideas and I’m interested to see what others say.

I do have one neighbor who has her yard sprayed periodically, but I don’t know anything about the pesticide used. I wasn’t so much concerned about the food for the birds as I was about potential direct harm to the birds. However, we each successfully maintain a nest box and nesting bluebirds.

Only thoughts I have are reaching out to groups like the Audubon Society – you may even have a local chapter – and your state’s Bluebird Society, if you have one. At least, perhaps find likeminded people and go from there pooling ideas and efforts.

Don’t know much about it. I know my daughter has her yard sprayed because mosquitoes are horrendous and she has nesting birds very successfully. I don’t know if it is a different spray than normally or not.???
