By my count, my bluebirds are likely to fledge soon. I know they were all hatched by June 3rd, so i think they could leave this weekend. Its been exciting but also anxious time, and i have refrained from opening the box recently, after they have gotten big.

Ready for a break from feeding them mealworms twice daily. Tempted, as weather permits, to sit and watch the box and see if i can witness the “first flight” event. Mom is still feeding them and i was previously able to count 5 babies at one time.

I’ve tried to not disturb the nest, i do whistle when i feed the adults, and ive seen the young stick their beaks out the entrance hole.

Thanks for the update – I, too, whistle when I feed worms and usually the family is there in a matter of 2 or 3 minutes. The fledged juveniles have not been coming quite as often lately – parents are probably trying to “cut the strings” for them to be on their own, as they now have new babies which are 5 days old and eating worms.

Chris, if the hatch was on June third the expected fledge date would be June 20. I don’t know if one or two would leave earlier if they hatched a day before the others. My fledging’s have always be all-day affairs. I have only seen 2 fledge within 30 minutes of each other once.

If they fledge on the 20th, that would be a good gift for father’s day.

We’re having stormy weather now (including tornado warnings), Sunday should be much more settled.
