The second set of nestlings has hatched. I think it happened yesterday as I saw both parents shuttling back and forth to the box . It was too hot for me to go out to look. So now a am looking at fledging around the 22-23 of July.

July 7, 2020 at 9:17 pm #8567That’s great, David!!! I’m amazed at how fast they hold their heads up. Our 4 hatched on July 4, and today their heads are up and mouths wide open! Such a marvel. Enjoy the feeding show!!!! Your July is going to be fun.

Judy – our hatches are pretty close. I am hoping that it stays warm enough for a third nest.David
Stafford, VAJuly 22, 2020 at 7:29 pm #8636Well, the 4 blues fledged either late yesterday evening or early this morning. I took some mealworms out for the evening feeding and did not see either the parents or any of the young. It was raining and the wind was blowing so I decided to see if they were still around – but found the nest box empty. The were feeding yesterday during the day but I never say any of the 4 come out of the nest. I will clean the nestbox tomorrow -after this much needed rain, and see if they return for a third sitting.

Stafford, VAJuly 22, 2020 at 8:17 pm #8637That is great news David. Did you leave the mealworms or take them back inside? Mine fledged 3 days ago, but still come to get the mealworms. I’m hoping to get a 3rd nesting too. They did get an early start this season, but I have never had a 3rd nesting. I’m wondering if the mealworms will entice them to nest again. On her second nesting she started building 3 days after they fledged. I will be watching tomorrow for nest action.

July 22, 2020 at 9:11 pm #8638Thanks Judy. I left the mealworms. It is still raining and I don’t feel like getting them. I will watch tomorrow to see if they return to the mealworm feeder like they did with the last group of fledglings.
