Checked my bb nest box today and found the 5 eggs smashed on the ground.
I guess I’m too late with Mylar tape.
My new sparrow trap was set up this afternoon.
Baited with popcorn and black sunflower seed.
Can’t wait to get a couple of those suckers.
Hosp has completely taken over my T-14. Will throw everybody out tomorrow.
Not sure who will move in. The PM’s are probably done nest selection by now.
BB won’t use it. Don’t know who will live there.June 18, 2016 at 3:44 am #2417Awe, so sorry! Was afraid of that. We all learn from experience unfortunately. At least you know what to do moving forward. I don’t have a deluxe repeating sparrow trap, but I know a lot of people on this forum use millet seed to attract HOSP into the trap. Hope you get the culprits!

June 19, 2016 at 4:17 am #2424So sorry! Don’t be disappointed when trying to use your trap. Sometimes it takes quite a while to get the first one. It’s easier once you have a decoy in the holding area. You’ll eventually catch your first one in your repeating trap but it’s much easier if you get one by trapping in your bluebird box with the Van Ert trap or trapping in your T-14 with a trap.
You need to check your trap regularly. Never leave it if you’re going to be out of town. It will catch native birds. I suggest going to the store and getting a bag of white millet seed or at least mixed seed that has a lot of white Miller in it. The black oil sunflower seed will work but will draw in a lot of native birds. Once you have a decoy in the holding area make sure you put water and food in it to keep those decoys alive so they can bring in other sparrows.
Don’t remove sparrow nests but instead let the sparrow get comfortable with the compartment and then use an inbox trap to catch them.
I think a universal trap would fit in your T-14. But I’ll ask for you. A good Facebook group for info on purple martins is Called “purple martin landlords, wannabes, and those that just enjoy them.”-

June 19, 2016 at 11:17 am #2428Tammy, thanks for the feedback/info. I’m on a steep learning curve.
My trap is baited with pop corn and millet. Some popcorn is on the top of the cage to draw them in.
I have had a suction cup seed feeder on our kitchen window for years. It is a very busy feeding station, mostly sparrows. Just below it is a forsythia bush neatly trimmed (flat top).
I’m considering taking down the window feeder and placing the trap on to of the bush.Yesterday I cleaned out the t-14 of nests, eggs and peeps. Today it is busier than ever with nest building flights.
Question; If the sparrow population is severely reduced, and no Purple Martins are in the area, what birds would nest in a T-14?
Thanks, Ron

Sorry, I thought I was the last to find out what a T-14 is.
It is a purple Martin house. I built one over the winter.
It is a four sided bird house. It has 14 houses, each with two rooms. A front compartment and a rear nest box. It is huge. A boat winch and cable raise it on a 14 ft post.
I would post a pic, but don’t know how.June 20, 2016 at 10:45 am #2441Crazy, stupid question – but here is – what is a T-14?
Hopefully, this link will show pics; maybe not.
June 20, 2016 at 11:03 am #2442Now that is impressive. How many pairs occupy this “apartment”?
David
Stafford, VAJune 20, 2016 at 11:07 pm #2448There are 14 compartments, each with a 2 section nest side in box.
