Well, in a couple of days my blues will be fledging – but just remembered something others may be interested in knowing.
Mama blue laid four beautiful blue eggs and they hatched right on target – 14 days – or I should say 3 hatched at 14 days. I noticed this and waited about another 2 days to check on them again and the one egg was still there. Well, I decided to let Mother Nature take its course and just left the egg alone. The parents never did move or take the egg out and after about another week the egg was still there, with the other 3 babies growing by leaps and bounds. I made a decision, right or wrong, to take the egg out so if it got broken it would not get all over the nicely growing other 3 babies. Well, apparently it was okay with the parents because they went on and tended the babies like they were doing. I will mention that this is only about the 2nd or 3rd season for this pair, so they maybe didn’t know to take the egg out or bury it deep in the nest so it wouldn’t get broken.

Carol I do that also. I will remove the unhatched egg after a few days for 2 reasons. One being it takes up some of the space the growing babies need to develop unless it gets pushed down in the nest. And 2nd like you mentioned you don’t want the egg to be broken as it will attract predators, mainly ants, flies, etc.
