Here it is, the middle of January, 50 degree weather, no snow, and the blue birds are visiting the nest box. I have 2 or 3 males and females fluttering around. I was surprised to see them this morning and did not have my camera out to get any photos. It has been so mild this winter that I do not believe that they have roosted in the nestbox. It is still clean.

Stafford, VAJanuary 23, 2017 at 11:46 pm #3079Hi David,
Pretty much the same weather conditions here in PA lately until today with the Nor’Easter. There’s been a flock of about 5 or 6 bluebirds visiting my mealworm feeder and checking out the nestbox. I haven’t seen them today I’m guessing due to the heavy winds and rain. I cannot wait until Spring for them to begin nesting. Here they don’t start nest building until April. So have awhile to go yet but enjoying their winter presence in the meantime. — Dana in Lancaster, PAJanuary 24, 2017 at 9:25 am #3080Thanks Dana. Where in Lancaster are you. Our ancestors settled in the Mount Joy – Marietta area in the mid 1700s. There are still a lot of Engle’s in the area. We had a big 205th reunion with over 600 people attending back in 2004.

We are in West Lampeter Township in a community surrounded by farmland. In fact there’s a county park right down the road from us that has a bluebird trail. We moved up here from northern Maryland about 10 yrs ago. Lots of Amish here and lots of Amish produce stands in the summer on the road sides with the best tomatoes I’ve ever eaten! Your family has been in PA a very long time! That is awesome! PA is a beautiful state with it’s rolling hills, cornfields, cow pastures, and farms. We love it here! — Dana
February 6, 2017 at 12:25 pm #3107Mobile, Alabama, Feb 6th. We are having Spring like weather. A pair of bluebirds check out my nesting box lately. Checked the box this morning and was surprised to see nesting material in it. Didn’t expect it this early in the season. They must be making a reservation.

February 8, 2017 at 11:24 am #3121Very late spring-like here today. 69 degrees right now. There has been a lot of flying to the nest box also but it is too soon to be building. I won’t be long though.

Stafford, VAFebruary 10, 2017 at 4:20 pm #3128Bluebirds have been bringing nesting material to the box daily. The weather is still very mild. Could this be the reason nest building is so early? The pair are going at it heavily today. Will keep you posted.

February 24, 2017 at 1:04 am #3180Yes…Could be. They might nest early this year but I hope not because our weather can change quickly and I don’t want those babies exposed to super cold temps. Sometimes they act like this and then stop building for several weeks.

February 24, 2017 at 6:09 am #3181The bluebird nest is complete. I’m now waiting for the female to stay in the box and incubate eggs. The pair visit daily but remain on the perch. We still have mild weather. Will post when eggs are laid.

February 24, 2017 at 8:28 am #3182I’m with Tammy – it is too early for eggs yet, unless POSSIBLY in the lower southern states. Eggs/babies cannot withstand extremely cool weather. One or two years I have my blues’ early eggs turn out to be no good because of extreme cool snaps.
March 1, 2017 at 6:05 pm #3205The female bluebird has stayed in the box the past 3 days. I’m sure she’s laying eggs. The male visits on occasion.
