I’m located in western NC and have a pair of nesting eastern Bluebirds in a pole mounted box in the backyard. This is my first attempt to host these birds. I’m pretty sure she is incubating and none have hatched yet.
I have a worm feeder nearby they are using that I have been putting dried mealworms in, but wanted to make sure I shouldn’t either stop feeding them at this point or soak the worms in water before putting them out.
You are asking an important question. So, do not feed dried mealworms to nesting birds.
The hatchlings only source of hydration is what they are fed by the mom and dad. If the mom and dad are starting a brood they will find all the bugs needed naturally.
I’m with Tim. I have raised my mealworms for several years until cold weather cooled my basement when I had to replace my wood burning stove a couple of years ago and killed off my beetles. You can use the dried worms in home-made suet for winter feeding.
