Horrible news. Breaks my heart.
I don’t know anything about wren guards, not personally, only what I’ve read and watched on the internet. But I doubt the Bluebirds will have any trouble figuring it out.
Yeah sucks.:(
I won’t give up.Here’s a lighthearted article I found:

Don’t you dare try to blame the chickadees for this nasty egg attack. Chickadees are the best birds ever. They would never do anything like that. Just look at that sweet little chickadee face and tell me how you could even think that they would be involved in such a thing. If anything, the ever-helpful chickadees probably tried to put the broken eggs back together. But as we have all learned from the sad adventures of a certain H. Dumpty, egg reassembly is no easy task, even for chickadees. So if it wasn’t the chickadees, who could have done this awful thing? Let’s examine the evidence.
Just very excited to share I had a surprise long bluebird visit to my suburban backyard box today! Feeling blessed today! I had been enjoying watching 4 male tree swallows in my front yard boxes the past few days and now this! The bluebird hung around for about a half hour. Hope he returns! I think my persistent sparrow control is finally paying off (our neighborhood is absolutely infested). Fingers crossed for a nesting for the first time.
I miss the Swallows

I thought they laid much earlier in the morning but lesson learned.

I barely saw mine building the nest, It was so fast.
I took the wren nest out. It was looking like a dummy nest anyway but I’d rather bluebirds use it.
April 23, 2025 at 3:00 pm in reply to: Bluebirds not laying eggs yet? Nest looks done. What gives? #27983I’m interested to see what others say. Legally, you should not interfere with the house wren nest, correct? Could you block the house wrens from finishing a nest in that box if they are only showing interest at this point? Would that be likely to send the house wrens to the bluebird nest box? That’s what I’m asking myself. Note sure what I would do.
According to the Migratory Bird Treaty Act I could take the nest out of the box as long as there are no eggs or nestlings.
I’ll let them continue.

Yeah, I’m going to watch it play out. I’d rather them have their own successful nest than harassing the blues! I have experience with them and know they go insane when other birds have nests nearby..
I’d have to agree with AIH. If disturbed it might focus on the bluebird nest. Maybe having some pesky stinkers like a wren pair around could help reduce some other predators. But the minute that wren decides to harass the blues I would be cleaning out their nest. I think the blues will defend the nest successfully if they have eggs present.

I figure they can have that box and the blues can have the other one??
That way less chance of the wrens getting angry and pecking the blues eggs to pieces
Hello all,
I have a question about bluebird behavior in my newly installed bluebird nest box just mounted yesterday, April 21. Within only a few hours of being mounted, I have observed both male and female bluebirds peeking in my box but none of either sex has entered it yet. The entrance hole is 1.5 inches and I have verified the box is still completely empty. I’m wondering if I have installed it too late in breeding season or whether there might still be some bluebirds scouting for nesting sites even at this later date in the season. Have most bluebirds already chosen a different nesting site? I am located in Massachusetts.
Thank you for your advice.
If it helps the day I put my box up very late and they went right inside it and the nest was constructed very quickly.
stay the course!

April 23, 2025 at 11:08 am in reply to: Bluebirds not laying eggs yet? Nest looks done. What gives? #27972Once she starts laying the eggs, the nest is hers and she will not likely abandon it. I usually put my spooker up after the first egg is laid.
I can confirm visually just a few moments ago, that she has accepted the sparrow spooker :)
here’s hoping for egg # 4

Hey, yes I put it up today. 3 eggs so far.
I watched for a while and didn’t see them go in but I’m sure they are when I’m not watching.

She finished laying the egg too.
I’ll wait longer next time.
