round 2 update.. so now .. mom is incubating away .. 4 eggs.. and … the RUNT (from previous fledgling) is STILL around! To make matters worse, the runt ( we have named her Reinita, after one of my sister in laws who never wants to do anything on her own (oops)) now has become bolder and she not only eats the mealworms from mom and dad, she now sits on top of the box with dad, while mom incubates!! lol .. I thought my wife was making it up till I seen it with my own eyes.. so mom comes out of the box .. picks up some mealworms during feeding time…. feeds Reina .. then back in the box to sit on the eggs, while Reinita and dad just chill around the box and on top…. its like.. the fifth wheel in a bird sorta way!

My wife and I are in mild disagreement. I believe that 10 mealworms per blu daily is the max. She wants to feed them ten each three times a day ..what y’all think? Does it really matter? Advice? Thankz

I second the opinion that no box should be attached to a privacy fence.. we lost mothers and babies years ago due to cats/raccoons climbing the fence.. nothing is worse than waking up one morning to check on the box and seeing a pile of blue feathers underneath the box!!!! This happened years ago and I still remember it! Like Dogsandbirds said.. put it on a greased pole and put a baffle on it.. we used a 5 gallon bucket with a hole in it upside down off center with a zip tie.. works just fine….. The fence is a death sentence sooner or later for birds/babies.

Well, Randy can you shoot me a text to 713 259 3080 please. I wanted to ask you some specific questions about the lowes box that you recommended (which we bought) and it would be a lot easier for me to attach the photos via cell phone pics/text then try and resize them or whatever you have to do to add them on this forum!

                Thanks

Hey everyone.. Well, mom is still feeding at least one of the fledglings.. and now she has already started building nest # 2.. I threw away the nasty poop ridden old nest and gave the box a good dusting .. do I need to like disinfect it with Clorox or is that overkill?

Also, can you PM people on this site? I was trying to PM Randy but don’t see where/how to pm people on this site. Thanks as always for all the helpful info!

PS that emoji of the two HOSP jumping has GOT to go lol!

Hey Y’all thanks for the info! Yes we were thinking about making our own box but that lowes one that Randy sent me the link with might work.. We just need it to be a bit taller than our box we have from Walmart as the wide angle on our spy cam doesn’t show the whole nest .. why they didn’t make the angle larger who knows..

I may just try and add an inch or two extension to the lowes one as it seemed to be quite well made with ventilation etc for the hatchlings.. and we sure need that here in the Texas heat!

                    – I was going to pm frank but .. what is his screen name? Frank? :-)

and lastly …when we were on here years ago there was a gentleman named 7th cousin George or something like that who always put up really cool close up shots of his bluebirds… Does he still come on the site?

                    Thanks!

Oh lastly .. where is a good place to buy untreated Cedar wood?
