Gin, the perch is quite a ways from the box. All the birds use it. Wish I had gotten a side opening box. I can only see part ways up mine. Last couple seasons the male also helped bringing material to the nest. Not so this time.

Thanks for your post, Gin. The door to my nesting box opens from the bottom and toward me. When the nest is finished I can’t see the top of the nest. I haven’t seen an egg, a chick or a fledge in 3 years. The only time I see the top of the nest is when I remove it to clean the inside at the end of the season. So far the male hasn’t participated in bringing material. He just stays on the perch guarding. It’s an odd way to start the breeding cycle this year. It looks like the nest is about 2/3s finished.

Bluebirds have been bringing nesting material to the box daily. The weather is still very mild. Could this be the reason nest building is so early? The pair are going at it heavily today. Will keep you posted.

The Pine Warbler at my feeders has paired up. The two are frequent visitors to the suet cake. This is their first season to find and eat here at my feeders. Posted elsewhere that I found nesting material in my bluebird nesting box this morning.

Mobile, Alabama, Feb 6th. We are having Spring like weather. A pair of bluebirds check out my nesting box lately. Checked the box this morning and was surprised to see nesting material in it. Didn’t expect it this early in the season. They must be making a reservation.

Had a pair visit the nest box yesterday. This was their second visit this winter. I have homemade suet out for them but they haven’t tried it yet. I have some dried meal worms I’ll put out. I thought they only eat the live ones. Love to follow this thread.

Thanks for your comments, Gin. I got a very good look at the Carolina wren at the feeder this morning. So glad it’s not a house wren. I’m afraid to put up another box. So far the one I put up is good for bluebirds. I don’t have any birds here disturbing them in any way. Right now all the birds are compatible. They move when the blue jay arrives and return when it leaves.

Took a hard look at the wren this morning. Noticed the white eye stripe. You are probably right Gin…..its a Carolina wren.
Are they as much a danger to bluebirds as the house wren?Lubricator
Positively house wren, Gin. No white stripe and it has a longer curved beak. Heard its chirp too. Checked my book “Birds of Alabama”. Only one comes to the feeders and does not check out the nest box. Brazen little devil. Thanks again for your comment.

Thanks for you comment. One house wren comes to feed daily. It doesn’t check the nest box. The pair aren’t visiting lately. I too hope they aren’t here in the spring. I’m in Mobile, Alabama.

The pair are definitely house wrens. Their distinctive chirp lets me know when they arrive. Did a little research on the web but didn’t find anything very helpful. Hope they’re gone by spring.

The metal perch is on the other end of the porch and not on the box. All the song birds use the perch but only bluebirds use the nesting box. I put out some homemade suet for them in case they return. I thank you for a prompt reply. I intend to be a frequent blogger.
