Well, my blues have been around all fall, coming to the worm bowl. But around the 1st of November I began feeding suet, as I always do. They have been coming to the bowl some but not eating the suet and now the winter birds (juncos & white-crowned sparrows) have arrived & they are loving the suet and the blues have not been around for 2 days. This has always happened in the past, but this year seems to be they are being a lot more stubborn – sure hope they quit pouting and stay around all winter, as they have done for the past 10 years! I do not intend to purchase any more worms until spring, so it is peanut butter suet or nothing!
November 8, 2018 at 4:03 pm #6941Hi Carol:
Like you I am not feeding any more worms, either live or dried. I was so thrilled this morning to see what I believe to be my last clutch with Mama and Papa checking out the BB house outside my dinette window. They looked in the house both males and females just like they do in the Spring. Then they all left and I checked the second box in my side yard and they were out there doing the same thing. I never expected to see any Blues again till spring but they are still here. I hope they stay and survive the winter. It is going to get really cold next week so I will keep my eyes peeled to see if they return again. I tried putting out a suet ball about a month ago but they did not seem to have any interest in it. I know the other birds will eat them so it is not a loss making them.
I hope yours remain. I will keep an eye on this forum to see how things are going down your way.Connie (PA)
November 9, 2018 at 10:56 pm #6944Well, Connie, they have finally figured out there are NO MORE WORMS so have bee coming around somewhat to the suet bowl, but so are all the other birds, mainly juncos and white-crowned sparrows and house finches which are the winter birds here. I have seen my blues some, but there are too many others around to watch all the time. We had our first snow of the year here in Missouri, which was about 1 inch and freezing temps. Burrr. . . .
November 13, 2018 at 8:08 pm #6945Hi Carol:
I have not seen any BB’s since my last sighting. Maybe they stopped by to say good bye till next Spring. It has turned cold here too and we had some snow and rain mixed last night and today. Guess there is more on the way. I am glad your blues are eating some of your suet. I will start putting the suet balls out in my main feeder in a week or so. Right now I think the black bears are still roaming the area, in fact bear season opens here shortly and I do not want to attract them.
Good hearing from you.
