Good morning all,
This morning I topped off the feeder with mealworms and little peanut butter suet balls. While I have had bluebirds all winter coming to feed, this time it looked like a bluebird couple showed up. Male and female both wing-waving and taking turns eating. Then the male led her to the slot-opening nestbox in my side yard which faces a open field. He went in and she followed him inside after a few minutes. They were in there for what seemed a long time checking out the nestbox. Then he flew out over to a tree at the edge of the field. She stayed on the roof of the nestbox for quite sometime before flying over to join him. It was really exciting to see them! Especially since today it’s bitter cold and windy. Obviously Spring is around the corner and they seem to be ready for it. –DanaFebruary 27, 2020 at 1:47 pm #7817Great, Dana – my regular pair have been scouting their box for about two weeks – last week I actually rid a HOSP out of this box and the blues were only about 30 minutes after that they were scouting it again! Today, this pair actually ran off a HOSP from the box – but I’m sure this will be the normal battle again this season. I usually leave one box for the HOSP to build in to keep them busy, but I never let any hatch – usually my VanErt trap does the job!
March 2, 2020 at 1:39 pm #7819Dana, good to read about your blues, are they still around?
I had a pair here all winter, and up until last Wednesday i was seeing them a lot, but not once since. Have no idea if they left or if I am just missing them. Hope it is just a case of looking outside at the wrong time.

March 3, 2020 at 5:09 am #7822Hi Carol and Sassy – Yes, the bluebirds are still around. They have now started defending the nestbox from other birds. Yesterday morning they were dive-bombing a starling that had landed on the roof of the box. I was watching out the living room window quietly cheering them on. There are other bluebirds still coming to my mealworm feeder but this particular pair seems very interested in the nestbox. I can’t wait for nest building to start but that is still weeks away. – Regards, Dana
March 5, 2020 at 3:21 pm #7825Hi Dana:
I am happy to report my pair is still here. I finally caught sight of them yesterday. This morning I had lots of bluebird singing and figured the Blues are either moving up from the south or it was my pair talking to each other. Later I saw a pair at the back box and I saw papa go into the mealworm feeder and eat either the few mealworms left from last year or some suet. Later I caught mama at the front box for an extended period of time, either completely in or looking out of the opening.
I am so glad to hear your pair is still there, I know how exciting that feeling is. Like you I can’t wait for the nest building to begin. It won’t be too long now.
