Well, my 5 bluebird babies in next #2 fledged today, which is actually at least 1 and maybe 2 days early. I had calculated that day 17 would be Thursday or Friday, but I saw parents take worms to the trees this morning when I fed the mealworms. I was worried that maybe one was left because I saw papa blue go to the box and look inside a few times this morning, but I believe he must have been checking the “house” for another new nest. We have cleaned out the box good and now I’m hoping they will use this same box if and when they have another nesting. Wow – what a year!!

Stafford, VAJune 10, 2022 at 8:46 pm #26539Thanks everyone – yes, been very good so far. My papa blue, however, has decided he wants to take a nestbox where I’ve been watching a HOSP build and trapped one. The new HOSP, however, has not found a mate so he was just waiting and watching, so papa blue decided to try to get his box. I’m a little worried that if the bluebird does start a new nest there that the HOSP will get mad. I’m really between a rock and hard spot with this – the blue’s other box where he has had two successful fledges is clean and ready for him but he seems like he “wants something different”. Oh well, what will be will be. Good luck everyone with future nestings.
P.s. Sure glad the forum is back up!!June 13, 2022 at 6:45 pm #26558UPDATE – Papa blue & mama did manage to take over this different nestbox where HOSP had been trying to build, and have a very nice, round nest with good cup – ready for eggs any day now. A pair of wrens have taken over the blues old box, and I’m keeping them busy by taking out sticks so they can put more in !! Who needs to spend oodles of money on outside entertainment when I have all I need looking out my window!! (P.S. yes, I do get out and about quite a bit though)
June 14, 2022 at 10:15 am #26559Good for you Carol. At this rate, you could see a 4th nesting.

Stafford, VAJuly 4, 2022 at 5:11 pm #26687Hi Everyone: I am so late in posting, but I did want to say Hi and wish everyone a Happy and Safe Fourth of July.
On the BB front, the first set of 5 fledged and for a while I did see them at the mealworm feeder and birdbath, then it dwindled to 4, but that is a good number.
Another nest was built shortly afterwards and 5 more eggs laid but only 4 hatched. Last week on the 14th day I heard a commotion between Mom and Dad going on and after watching for a while I saw a little one on the ground, it ran across the garden lickety-split with the parents zooming down right over it and it took flight for a few feet and fell back to the yard then disappeared into some peony bushes and the next day I heard it up in the hemlock tree chirping. When we left for camp on Thurs. the other 3 were still in the box, so won’t know their fate till later.
I will get the nest thrown out and the box cleaned for what I hope will be the third round.
I am going to try to catch up on some of your posts.
