Hello My Fellow Bluebird Members:
I was just outside and checked the box at the back of the house, the one I saw with one piece of dried grass on the floor and now the floor has maybe a couple dozen pieces formed in a circle. I am so excited so I checked out the front yard box and it had one piece of of a pine tree twig in it.
It has turned pretty chilly again, in the 40’s here at last check around 7:00 PM, so things may move slowly for a while.
Connie (PA)April 10, 2019 at 9:05 pm #7056Connie…..That’s exciting news, congratulations! Sounds like you might be lucky enough to have two nests started. Hopefully they will build slowly until the weather shapes up. Here in Michigan we are expecting snow tomorrow. Have not seen any bluebirds yet this season.
Happy Birding,
Judy-MichiganApril 11, 2019 at 7:46 pm #7057Hi Judy:
I had a few pairs stop earlier in the season but they didn’t stay. This pair has been around for a while now and Mama kept landing on the window screens. I covered one screen and she stopped going to that one but she goes to the one above my kitchen sink and clings to the screen and she also sits and defecates on everything, mirrors on my husbands truck, porch swing, window sills, porch, decks, you name it. Then I found this dried out grass in the bottom of the back box, but today she is at the front box. I do believe there is something wrong with her. The front box has the bottom covered with leaves and I know it is her doing it. I see her bring this stuff in, some so big she is unable to get it into the hole. It has no form to it, just wet and dried leaves and a few sticks. I can’t figure it out, none of it makes sense. I think she has the instinct to build a nest but not the sense to know how to do it. Well time will tell what is going to happen.
Our weather is not ideal but we are not due for any snow, heavy rain with possible thunder storms tomorrow and wind gusts accompanying them 50 to 60 mph.
I hope your blues turn up soon. I didn’t have any till May the last couple years, this is the earliest I have had a pair.
Connie (PA)April 13, 2019 at 10:17 am #7059Enjoying your mama blue postings. I hope she gets nest building figured out. Very weird using all the strange materials. Keep us posted on her progress. Maybe the weather will shape up soon.
Happy birding,
Judy-MichiganApril 13, 2019 at 8:34 pm #7060Connie, my bluebirds started that way. It took her 3 days to complete a circle but then it took only two days to complete the whole nest. She did that yesterday. No eggs today but I expect her to begin laying sometime this week. I have been digging close to the box prepping my flower garden (which I haven’t done for ages and am fighting tree roots). I have been throwing beetle larva and grubs that I find while digging but have not seen them come down for a meal.

Stafford, VAApril 14, 2019 at 11:09 pm #7066Hi Judy:
Mama has continued on the front box on and off and later this afternoon I saw the male go in and out of the box taking some material out. Then later he was back and sat on the roof singing and chattering. I thought it was maybe a different male looking for a mate. I saw Mama once later this afternoon. After dinner and before the storms started I walked out and checked both boxes and they both have perfect bluebird nests in them. Go figure. They both are damp on the front of the nest, hopefully they will dry out, but after tonights heavy rain they might be worse. No eggs in either but I will keep an eye on things.
Any blues out your way yet Judy…
Connie (PA)April 15, 2019 at 7:01 pm #7070Connie, maybe this is the year you will have 2 sets of bluebirds!!! I have not seen any blues yet, last year the 1st one showed up May 5th. I keep watching, but our weather is still cold with spitting snow and sleet. Nice days are few and far between. Winter is not wanting to give up. I’m excited for you……good luck!

April 15, 2019 at 10:50 pm #7075Judy I went out to check the nests after the 1 1/2” of rain and very gusty winds last night and found both of them wet. Didn’t see as much of my female but the male was on and off the roof of the front box. We had snow here this AM so I figured that might have something to do with it. I did see them both this evening. Weather is supposed to improve as the week moves on so am hoping things dry out. I don’t think I have two sets of blues, just one very paranoid female.
