Well, as I posted yesterday my nest with 5 eggs seems to be done – eggs are cold & mama not incubating – I marked eggs with black dots & they have not been rotated. THE GOOD NEWS – this pair, or papa & a new mama, I’m not quite sure, have been hot and heavy on my newest Gilwood box yesterday afternoon and ALL this morning. I looked inside & found this nest. It isn’t fine grasses or pine needles like blues usually use, but is tidy and no junk and nice cup already. Could she have built this in just one day – I’m almost positive I had removed what I thought was a HOSP nest (I had seen them on it) about 3 days ago, and in fact had captured one in it. But all I have seen on it is this pair of blues the past 2 days. I did not see her bringing any nesting material in, however, I don’t watch 24/7 either. OPINIONS needed – Bluebird nest or HOSP?
April 24, 2016 at 8:28 pm #1607It’s not trashy so I’m not thinking HOSP. She very well could have built this in a day. Tomorrow she will probably add some finer grass to line the cup.

Atlanta, GAApril 24, 2016 at 9:29 pm #1609Thanks, Gin – I believe you are right and I never thought about adding finer grass later to line the cup. Papa has been guarding this box most of the day and the pair of them have been on & off the box & wing-waving all day long. Thanks for responding so quickly – I get nervous when I cannot positively identify a nest. Oh, I did have a HOSP nest get built to the top of a different box before I knew it – I had been removing & trapping them at this back box all spring. When I trapped the female and began taking out the nest, there were 4 eggs in the bottom – I didn’t like this at all. But since mama is gone so are the eggs. I left trap in thinking I would get the male today but have not so far.
April 24, 2016 at 10:30 pm #1610As soon as I looked at your photo of the nest I thought it looked a lot like my Bluebird nest. Other years my nests were a little more elaborate, and more to them. This years looks like yours, but with 5 blue eggs! Yeah!
Good luck!April 27, 2016 at 6:21 pm #1626Hi Carol,
I too was concerned about a nest, she had layed only 2 eggs, after 21 days I checked and still 2 eggs, I decided to check other boxes and sure enough without me seeing them they had a new nest with 6 eggs in it. Now I don’t know what to do with the nest with 2 eggs in it.
Maybe Gin or Tammy might reply here.
PamiApril 28, 2016 at 8:56 am #1634Wow Gami – this is exactly what has happened to me. As I said the first 5 eggs were no good so after almost a week I took the eggs out but left the beautiful nest in the box. Well, this pair built the nest I posted pic of and at that time it had a nice cup in it. Since that picture it seems the nest has been disturbed because the nice cup is not there, just sort of flat, but the pair of blues are continuously on the box wing-waving but do not seem to be doing anything further to the nest. HOWEVER, they are ALSO doing the same thing to this first nest at the different box closest to our home, I guess they know this WAS their nest. Maybe they are confused and I should remove one nest?????? This is my question. As for your 2 eggs, you know they are not viable after this time and I would remove the eggs – same question would apply for the nest itself. I do like to have a spare nest for emergency. HELP here needed…….
April 28, 2016 at 9:37 am #1635Pami, If you waited 21 days and if these are not new eggs for sure…I’d just remove them. Nest and all.

April 28, 2016 at 9:38 am #1636Carol, a flat nest would make me think the babies fledged…no chance of that right? I’d just leave both nests alone until they decide. You girls are having all sorts of issues!
Tammy
April 28, 2016 at 11:09 am #1646Tammy, no babies (OR EGGS) were ever in this newer (Gilwood) box – only the beginning nest which I posted picture of above in this thread. The first nest & 5 eggs which were laid was a failure, as the eggs were not viable and this is the box where I have the other, empty nest. Yes, we Missourians are having a very strange season. Of course, it was 48 degrees again this morning, very chilly, maybe this is why the blues are holding off.
