After a week of heavy rain, I was clearing water from my basement. While taking a break from this back-aching chore I spotted my bluebird pair carrying beak-loads of pine needles to the nestbox. Of course I had my hands full of coffee and a snack and not a camera. But I did get a shot of both after they had put their building supplies into the box. I haven’t been out to see if they were building during the storms. Nest 2 is on the way.

Stafford, VAJune 4, 2018 at 8:08 pm #6513Great news David. Super picture of your BB pair, and I know they built here during the rain. That does not seem to hamper their instincts.
I saw a new pair of Blues at my other house this AM. Let me tell you it was excitement overload. I hope they decide to come back as the pair I have in the my back yard house did. That pair has 3 eggs as of noon today and my mealworms are on order.
I am going to keep a close eye on the front house tomorrow to see if the new pair returns.
Connie (PA)June 4, 2018 at 8:12 pm #6514Great news Connie. I hope your second nestbox gets used. I did check the box ths afternoon and there is nesting material being “installed”. Not enough for the cup but it is beginning to form.

Stafford, VAJune 4, 2018 at 8:49 pm #6516Keep us informed on the progress David. Here you are on the second nesting and I am still on the first. I think weather is the main reason for the delay here. Today’s high was 67 degrees.
Connie (PA)June 10, 2018 at 10:30 pm #6545Second nest seems to be built and the pair are flying back and forth to the nestbox but no eggs yet. I saw them today with several of their first fledges sitting on the shepherd’s hook. They appeared to be feeding the young ones. It was good to see the new birds but I didn’t have my camera while mowing the lawn. I just might have to mount a camera on the tractor so I can use it while I work outside.

Stafford, VAJune 11, 2018 at 9:09 am #6546Yeah, those yard/household chores DO get in the way sometime – that is why I have never put a nest cam in my box because I would get NOTHING else done. Congrats on the new nest – I’m hoping my pair will build another soon – but fledgilngs are just out of box 2 days so parents have some teaching to do first hopefully!
June 11, 2018 at 1:18 pm #6549Happy for you Carol. It is raining again today so I haven’t been out to check on the nest. Will post something later today if the rain ever stops.

Stafford, VAJune 11, 2018 at 4:47 pm #6551Got out to the nestbox an hour ago and found the first egg of the second brood. More to come.

June 12, 2018 at 9:53 pm #6581Another egg today – but even better 3 of the first brood showed up with parents for a while. They spooked before I could get the camera out the door for a pic. I put up a second shepherd’s hook so the whole family can rest in the sun (if there is sun).

Stafford, VAJune 13, 2018 at 6:18 pm #6585Third egg – and the 3 young from the first group are still around. Saw one fly to the ground as if it were trying to feed on a bug or larva of some sort. Also just noticed that I deleted a photo from my imgur album that was posted above.
Tammy – any way to insert another photo there?David
Stafford, VAJune 17, 2018 at 5:51 pm #6602Well, it has been 3 days since the female bb laid the 4th egg. Just checked the box and there is no 5th egg. She has been in the box almost all day so I am presuming the start of incubation. I am looking forward to these 4 hatching around June 28-29.

Stafford, VAJune 17, 2018 at 8:48 pm #6604Wow David, that is good news. I am glad some of the first nestlings are coming around. I hope I see that here too. The eggs are due to hatch this week, sometime between the 19th and 21st if I figured right. The second box got no takers, but I am happy with just this one pair. I did not think I was going to get any this year. I doubt if they do a second go round, but hey who knows, I may be lucky.
Connie (PA)June 20, 2018 at 4:16 pm #6612There is plenty of time for a second nesting.
