I finally got some photos of the new fledgling. I didn’t get them coming out of the box as they must have started before I got up this morning. When I went to the kitchen to get my coffee and see what was happening outside I saw the flurry of activity on my shepherd’s hook and the nest box.
Hope you enjoy the photos (There are several pagesDad bird ready to feed the one left in the box
Mom bird ready to feed the one remaining in the box
This might be one of the previous fledglings. Several we back to watch the new ones.

Stafford, VAAugust 19, 2019 at 12:19 pm #7724This looks like one of the previous fledglings waiting for the last one to come out.
Here is one of the best shops today. Siblings getting their wings with their older siblings

It’s been a very good year. (Hmmm – that sounds like a song that I heard some years ago)

Stafford, VAAugust 19, 2019 at 5:44 pm #7726This little rascal is still in the box. It must be the last one that hatched (smallest on in prior photos). Mom and Dad birds are still feeding it. Maybe tomorrow.

Stafford, VAAugust 19, 2019 at 8:35 pm #7729David, as always your pictures are great‼️ I like the ones with the older siblings hanging out with the new fledglings. What fun they are to watch. Thanks for sharing. It has been a very good year. Already looking forward to next season.

August 19, 2019 at 8:36 pm #7730David, thanks for sharing. Love the one of the newly fledged being “taught” by their siblings. I have never had them stay on the box like that – they always go to the closest tree. Very good capture of the one in flight! P.S. My last one to fledge was in the box all night by himself and went away the next morning – bet he was lonely, but then again, he had the bed all to himself!
August 19, 2019 at 9:11 pm #7732Thanks Carol and Judy. The pictures are the next to best thing about this “hobby”, the first being able to send 2 or 3 broods of Bluebirds into the world.
Carol – I this is the first year that I have seen them around the box like this. It may be due my neighbor losing a couple of trees that were the usual first landing spot for the fledglings. There are no trees or substantial bushes for 50 feet or so for the young ones to fly to. I believe they may have just fluttered down to the stove pipe and then flew to the shepherds hook where Mom and Dad were perched. That is where I saw the first group of 3 birds this morning.
btw – as of about 8:00 PM the last one is still in the box. Like yours – it will rest overnight alone and will probably go before I get up tomorrow.David
Stafford, VAAugust 21, 2019 at 11:11 am #7740Finally Gone
Checked at 8:30 this morning and he was still there. Went to get gas in the car and checked again when I returned about an hour later and he was gone. almost 2 1/2 after the first ones. This one was probably that late hatch and was not able to compete with the others for food. Just took longer to develop. (Or he was just enjoying the peace and quiet.)
I am removing this box and may put up a new on next year.

August 21, 2019 at 4:53 pm #7745Yes, I was beginning to worry, too, David. So glad he made it – that is really a long time difference, but like you said, he maybe was enjoying having that house all to himself!
August 22, 2019 at 10:17 pm #7753Thanks Judy and Carol. It has been a fun, if not trying year. But we seem to have made it and have some ideas for our next season. I am going to try a new box also using a bigger floor and if the kids got the hint about the mealworm feeder, I will try to start the year with mealworms.
Let’s enjoy our “time off”. See you next year!

Stafford, VAAugust 23, 2019 at 8:33 pm #7758David your pictures are top notch. I always enjoy seeing them, and I also never saw any sitting on the box while fledging, but maybe no close trees explains it. I have apple trees close to the box so that was where they all headed. Thanks for sharing your blues with us.
ConnieAugust 23, 2019 at 8:37 pm #7759Thanks Connie, It has been fun.
