So my EABL’s successfully fledged one out of 4 eggs. Two didn’t hatch and the other disappeared leading me to believe a chick died and was removed. The chick fledged last night. Momma and Papa are still hanging around today leading me to believe the baby is very close by. Question: What are the chances they will have a second clutch? I’m concerned because only one fledged and they may deem this an “unsuccessful” location. I am in Western PA btw so definitely within the time frame for two clutches.
It was a success to them. Fledging marks success, not hatch rate. I don’t know if they will nest again but I would clean out the box and see what happens.
Good news! Heard Billy singing this morning. Checked the box and found several strands of grass so I believe a second nest is just beginning. I will monitor the box for HOSP activity but haven’t seen any since the last “massacre at dawn” (6 in the HOSP trap at once, mwah hah hah!!). I’m 99% sure it’s EABL’s building again but want a visual.
I had one fledge 17 days ago. The baby, Patriot, has come out of hiding this week and is being fed by the parents. It’s quite a sight.
The parents built a second nest in the same box and in another box close by within 24 hours of fledging. They are around daily and go in and out of the box all day long, yet no new eggs after 17 days of second nest building.
I’m in south eastern Pa. My five Blues successfully fledged on May 18, I’m still seeing 4 of the 5 little kids. Momma just laid her fifth egg again yesterday so I don’t think your timing sounds too off. Good luck, it’s so exciting to watch isn’t it? Hope you get that pretty blue egg soon!
It’s gut wrenching! And I’m convinced the father is more impatient then I am, as he goes in and out regularly looking for that first egg. The female was just in there this morning for a few minutes, but she does that and then disappears for the day.
Egg#1 was laid this morning! Mom and dad hanging around a lot more than normal. Actually dad dive bombed me checking one egg or I would have taken a picture. I think the HOWR and HOSP activity has them on guard. Putting the Sparrow Spooker up now.
