Thanks Tammy! That makes me feel so much better! I’ve never had a problem with them either but after the attack on the last clutch I am super paranoid and want to make sure nothing like happens again.
Thankfully we don’t have house wrens or house sparrows in this area.-Martha
Thanks Gin, we put a wobbling stovepipe baffle on today and also moved the nest box into a more open area. I am not familiar with the snake trap but I will look into it.
Should I leave the nest in the box? If the same pair try again maybe they will use it?? I’ve heard that they will but I’m not sure…-Martha
A similar thing happened here with a Carolina Chickadee. We kept an eye on it till late evening and then put it back in the nest box. The next day it fledged.

Thank you Lisa. We don’t have house wrens here thank goodness. I still feel like it was a snake. We DO have a lot of snakes in this area. We also have raccoons though.

So sorry that they haven’t shown up this year. When I started out I read or heard that attaching a blue ribbon to the roof would attract them. Apparently the ribbon waving in the wind catches their eye. I don’t know if it really works but I would give it a try.

They usually visit my yard and hummingbird feeders in the spring for a week or two but I haven’t seen any this year. I always cut oranges in half and put them in the yard with the other feeders. They love them.

Hi Dene, I’m from Louisiana, just outside of Shreveport, so we should have similar schedules on nesting in general. My bluebirds usually start nest building early to mid-March. The first clutch of this year fledged a couple of days ago.
It may be that your pair are just getting a late start or maybe had to leave their previous box for some reason. Anyway, I know you’ll enjoy having them!

Thank you Tammy! I’ll try those suggestions.

Thank you Carol. I’ll do that. I’ve never had an ant problem but there’s a first time for everything.

I’ve been gone for a long long time too. So long I had to create a new account. I’m a Facebook user. I do a lot of machine embroidery and found groups on there to be very helpful when I was starting out and had lots of questions.
I would love to find some good birding groups on there. Any suggestions?-

Hi Mel, congratulations on all the babies! I live in northwest Louisiana too. I’ve heard that Bluebirds will not tolerate Chickadees near them but I’ve had them nest about 20 feet apart for years. The first year I put up a nest box the Chickadees built a nest in it first. I wanted bluebirds so I put up another box nearby and they built in it. They do harass the Chickadees at first but the Chickadees are fast and determined. After a little while the blues don’t seem to mind them. This has been going on for about 12 years. I did put a hole reducer on the Chickadees box. I’ve never heard of Bluebirds taking care of Chickadees though.

I live in northwest Louisiana and have them all winter. The young from the summer before hang around with the adults. They are always a welcome sight.

Good News! My husband went home and said they are going in and out of the house like nothing is wrong!
